In Another World With My Smartphone #01 — Omega Sue

July 11th, 2017

This is particularly poor season for characters that don't piss me the hell off.

Impressions:

I don't get it. Is the idea that nobody would make a character that much of a Mary Sue that it must be a parody? But if it is, then where's the rest of the joke? We just have this block of motile sludge going around who's utterly bland and completely inoffensive, but also happens to be the literal best at absolutely everything. Do they think tossing out a little "God made him that way" makes it palatable or better than if he just was? And if we're going to do painfully blatant wish fulfillment crap, why can't it ever be someone being a constant badass instead of being a simpering pile of mush sipping tea with airheaded bimbos prone to Stockholm Syndrome?

“Do they think tossing out a little “God made him that way” makes it palatable or better than if he just was?”

In this case, its seems more like a really obvious allegory for how these power fantasy setups work. The main character is better than everyone else in the show right off the bat because he literally has a god (author) given advantage in every significant aspect.

At least in Knights and Magic, the MC had the (lame) excuse where in his past life, he was a genius at computer programming and since magic apparently works the same way, (because plot) he was a genius at magic. In this show, the MC isnt even shown in his past life just to have some point of reference. Hes just dead because God and is now in a new world with every ability and advantage given to him automatically. Because God.

Did everyone watch Konosuba and decide to make a worse version?

  • Fluffums says:

I can say with certainty that this one gets worse as long as it stays true to the webnovel/light novel. But no one should be surprised by that, right?

I don’t get those kind of shows.
They are suppossed to be wish fulfillment but completely fail at being that. I mean the mc is surrounded by hot girls but never touch any of them (not even holding hands WTF ), is special at doing things but is bland/stupid/airhead/etc … Whose wish is that ? Because it’s not the wish of 99% of normal teenage boy .
Wouldn’t a wish fulfillment mc be a badass, sarcastic, witty and sleeping with every girls at the same time ?

I’ve seen/read a good bunch of isekai works, and I can say without any kind of doubt, that this was the most bland and souless of all them. And all the batch of current isekai is already pretty generic, but this was on a whole new level. This was just an isekai checklist.

I mean, what was the point of him “rescuing” the girls when they are already pretty powerful by themselves? Just to cover the rescue in the first encounter?

I’m not saying this is the “worst” isekai I’ve seen, there are probably some worse than this one, but even those that are worse are better than this one in a way: every single of them at least have some original gimmick.

I thought the smartphone was the “gimmick” for this one, but no, since the phone is irrelevant, all that matters is that he also gets a best at everything buff.

Wow yea is a shameless copy of Konosuba with a much worse male lead, so if any show gets any success, expect 3 or 4 copies in less than a year, this whole industry if full of shit.
