Action Heroine Cheer Fruits #01 — Product Pitch

July 6th, 2017

Wait, are they pitching the greatness of product pitching?

Impressions:

There's something a little disturbing about the way this show presents its understanding that these sentai stage shows exist solely to shill merchandise, how childish the fans are, and then turns around and goes "AND THEY ARE THE PRECIOUS DREAMS OF CHILDREN THAT MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS." I try to imagine a western show even pitching for a single episode the premise that Donald McRonald didn't show up, and a five year old is disappointed. They'd spend the rest of the episode mocking how idiotic and stupid the thing is, not glorifying McRonalds. Sure, they'd eventually come to realize a valuable lesson about the ephemerality of childhood wonder and dress up like a meat-clown, or ninja turtle or whatever. They certainly wouldn't have multiple montages of them attending Clown College, a post graduate at Bovine U, and then showing off their entire clown performance with the promise of yet more to come.

And therein lies the crux. First, it would be only one episode, not an entire goddamned series. Second, this skips over any introspection period, or the "–is important DESPITE all the awfulness" and goes straight for EVERYTHING IS AWESOME right off the bat. Everybody gets along. Everybody does their best. Everybody is excited about everything. There is no drama. There is no conflict. There is no struggle. The closest thing is Girl A going "Oh no, I promised something I'm not sure I can do." And then, about a minute and a montage later, she's doing it. That's not development or a challenge that was overcome. Remove the montage and that could almost pass as a gag. I guess there's a couple other girls in the background being insecure too, until, of course, they discover Girl A and Girl B Doing Their Best™ in the most inoffensive manner possible.

5 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • kenuran says:

Castlevania anime will probably show up sometime tomorrow. You gonna watch it?

    • v1cious says:

It’s not anime, It’s by Warren Ellis, just like GI Joe: Resolute

Early reviews are saying it’s too short, and serves more as a Prologue to Castlevania.

    • Aroduc says:

Probably, but I doubt I’ll cover it, and definitely not today given the billion premieres.
