Matoi the Sacred Slayer #01 — Cleavage

October 4th, 2016

Someday, I'll use that to mean carving things up. But not today.

Impressions:

I'd feel a lot better about this show if either the hook or the 'exciting' climax of the episode showed any real action. Standing there for ten odd seconds while a technicolor explosion plays out is not as compelling as they appear to think it is. It's already clearly half-assing the art to make it a little more dynamic-seeming, but usually that means that it's actually going to be more dynamic, not just… technicolor explosions. The protagonist(s) are also the most obnoxious parts of the cast, and that's with all the males being there pretty much just to gawk at/fondle boobs so they can be 'hilariously' punched or otherwise rebuffed. I'd already much rather the show be following Not-Fate and her sidekick. Thankfully, it looks like she'll be showing up in main events next week, but again, even her intro bit wasn't blowing me away.

It's mostly servicable, I suppose. This is ground exceedingly well-treaded and it slots itself right into the grooves left by franchises like CCS, Nanoha, or Symphogear. Unlike those, it doesn't really have any gimmick yet that makes it stand out, just a regression if anything to the cliche of the unwilling protagonist who needs to be dragged kicking and screaming into having super powers and responsibility. The presence of adults in the main cast at least seems like an indicator that it might try to at least partially veer away from banal high school friendship nonsense, although the next episode preview doesn't seem to indicate that so much.

This animation style, I don’t know what you’d call it where it looks like they only drew the rough draft of the character designs, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a good show with this style.
