Re:Zero #14 — Subaru Feels Sorry For Himself Part 13

Why exactly is an elderly butler a better fighter than him?

Impressions:

You'll never guess how this episode plays out. Subaru feels sorry for himself, sits there while things are explained to him, throws tantrums, listens to more exposition, is enabled by whichever random girl is closest, and then, in the last seconds, stares in horror at some tragedy that rocks his world. Oh wait, that's how every goddamned episode plays out. Meanwhile, he continues to have completely forgotten about the show's premise his only useful magical power to redo things that went wrong or that he screwed up. It'd be one thing if they had shown some kind of major consequence to it, like that the cosmic balances say if he saves one person, someone else must die, or abuse of that power ala Groundhog Day made him realize how badly he was screwing up, but nope. He tearfully killed himself way back when specifically for the reset and everything turned out great, then completely and utterly forgot that he could do that ever again, greeting each new spat and massacre like it's the first time he's seen anything like it, clutching his chest and sobbing at his helplessness after a complete lack of effort.

Depending on how Macross and Zestiria do next week, Subaru, this may be where we part ways. You keep strumming that same fiddle, being a self-absorbed, melodramatic jackass, helpless to circumstance. Only not. Because you and the writers seem to be the only ones who have forgotten the show’s premise and how every single one of these has played out.

    my niqqa are you sarcastic
an old man who has been in the army can kick mine and ur ass

  • Anonymous says:

He recalled his power during the conversation in the office. He started banking everything on it, thinking he can just redo till he gets it right. That is why the butter says “there is no point in training a man that has given up on improving himself”.also this was his first massacre with burned up piles and all.show is bad but name the right reasons

  • passerby says:

Triggering a reset still requires him to die first. I know that “redoing loops” are convenient, but it still requires his death. You can’t expect the guy to just up and commit suicide like it’s nothing, he is not at the stage where he is a death-seeker just yet.

thanks god the death finally came back i missed it

Dude went to the Tales of Xillia school of elderly buttling.

  • Ashlotte says:

You would think at this point when he saw something like this he’d just sigh and slit his throat or something. Slow adapter I suppose.

    • Aroduc says:

He already killed himself once to get a do-over just because this girl died. Or was it the other one? But this time, it’s seriouser. For some reason.

      • elior1 says:

i guess this time it more serious because in all the previous times he didnt sew so many corpses and such massacre. in arc 1 and 2 he only sew one death and not witnessed a massacre

Big problem I have with this series or, perhaps the fanbase is the over reliance on the term mental illness. Every time Subaru becomes terrified or something some bodies does an excessively long and convoluted explanation of Subaru’s character somehow being consistent with the existence this apparent mental illness he is going though. Really don’t know where thy pulled that shit from, I’m assuming the author implied this or directly mentioned it at some point or as Q&A. Not really working for me. Gotta try harder than that. This excuse for Subaru reminds me of RPing on a particular game only to be blown up by some rogue that went “insane”. Needless to say “insanity” was the stock background for creation of a character that enabled a player in an RP environment to kill with impunity.
