First Love Monster #01 — Dick Touching

July 2nd, 2016

There's a lot more dick stuff in this episode than I was expecting, which is still better than idols.

Oh wait, that's what the ED is. A concert with all the characters forming a boy band.

Impressions:

Oh god, yes. I love it when shows open with the main character spending minutes introducing themselves, their salient traits, and what their backstory. Exposition is the best approach to characterization. Especially when there is never, ever a moment of silence. Just a constant stream of exposition filling every single possible moment. It's probably at its strongest when the protagonist shuts the hell up and just acts 'cutely,' but that's extremely rare. It did ease up a little bit in the second half, but that's because the focus shifted a bit to the guys touching their dicks, which I'm hardpressed to say if it's a step up or not. It spends most of its time in what I think is generally called the shoujo dimension, all glowing white backgrounds, cherry petals blowing in the wind, bubbles appearing, and sparkles sparkling every time two characters make physical contact.

Speaking of which, it doesn't so much as have jokes for most of the episode as the protagonist occasionally morphs into a different art style and makes a face, and there's a set of male characters who dress like ten year olds. Supposedly they act like them too, but hell if I can tell how that's different. They're no less melodramatic and no more immature than anime teenagers at any rate, and since they're intentionally irritating, there's that. They more innocently play with their dicks, I guess? It's the same ground as Mitsudomoe, but extra uncomfortable since they're drawn about ten years older, and I'm not sure if my raised eyebrow at their dick antics was because I was briefly considering a chuckle or if I could really believe that Japan created a show about teenagers who are supposedly children play with their dicks in a public park. At least the production's… okay. Not strong, but better than this kind of show normally gets.

Of all the shoujo anime coming out, this seems a bit more… interesting, I guess. Hope it doesn’t fuck it up… p-pfffffft!

  • Sanjuro says:

It wasn’t too bad. I might give it a go if it keeps being this stupid.

  • The Phantom says:

It was godawful, lasted 5 minutes for me, female lead was particularly annoying, but yea the initial exposition was hard to swallow, maybe a girl can relate more to shows like this but I just cant, is just annoying for me.
