D.Gray-Man HALLOW #01 — Clown Flashbacks

July 4th, 2016

What have I done to deserve this?

Impressions:

As someone who did not watch the hundred or so episodes predating this from many years back that this is supposedly meant to be a direct continuation of, I was skeptical of a number of things. It did start… moderately, I guess. This is a director who needs to brush up on their choreography and rely less on the Dragon Quest-style animation techniques of showing some guy slash, then cutting over to some limb to show it being slashed. Perhaps we might combining those things. Which still wouldn't have made that sequence impressive, but it wouldn't have hurt.

Alas, that seems to be about where the budget ran out, because the rest of the episode was spent being shepherded from point A to point B to point C to be yammered at by various bizarrely drawn things. Maybe they would've meant more if I recognized anything, but I doubt it. If that wasn't bad enough, there were flashbacks with clowns. Another Japanese master of his destiny here. Nothing gets me more amped up for a show of intrigue, action, and adventure like watching a ten minute monologue punctuated by clowns. Maybe next week will take things to the next level with a fifteen minute monologue randomly interrupted by mimes! As not an existing fan, I already had one foot out the door, and this episode only convinced me to get my ass all the way gone.

At least there’s an Eva reference.

Sob, the manga is great though. Im a diehard DGM fan so even if Hallow is low-budget and has shoddy animation, I’ll definitely be watching it. Some of the scenes look great as screenshots, but as you mentioned it doesn’t look pretty when it moves. Oh well.

I am out as well, I watched the first few episodes of the series so many years ago. Is not bad but I am so behind that will need to rewatch the whole thing, is not my favorite kind of show either.
