91 Days #01 — The Beard

July 8th, 2016

That is one luxurious beard.

Impressions:

Come on, Japan. A revenge story, the mafia, this shouldn't be as hard as you're making it. We could've had Thomas and Martha Wayne murdered in front of him in the first 30 seconds and moved on. But of course not. That was half the damn episode. The pacing was not going to pick up from there. Probably because it's a lot easier and cheaper to animate nothing/talking heads. Even when submachine guns and close-up crotch grabs came into the picture, the animation was only to marginally improve from non-existent to hilariously awful. Nor did that stop the talking heads, as they were content to continue placidly chatting for entire minutes at a time while the world's most unlimited ammo clip was being unloaded at them.

Like many a Shuka thing, it seems more concerned with the setting than characters or a story. Oh sure, it sets up that his family's murdered, but what he's doing so far is just hanging around, waiting for someone else to show up and rant so we can pretend like something's going on. There's a bunch of people, only one of them really does anything or has a personality, and he's the ridiculous lunatic waving a gun around. The protagonist just gets talked at, scowls, and for about five seconds, puts a knife to Cray Cray Dude's throat. We're not exactly talking Beatrix Kiddo here, except for maybe that part where she was in a coma.

4 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Sol says:

Not sure what’s up with your “Come on Japan” bit. Hollywood keeps repeating Bruce Wayne’s parents murder in every single damn Batman movie. The last one took up a third of a 3 hour long snorefest, mind you.

  • anise_punter says:

Why are all these shows so dark and washed-out?

  • residentgrigo says:

The Wayne murder NEEDS to be repeated in EVERY continuity,as Bruce never got over it. That tragedy is what drives him. He is 55 in DKR and he still has nightmares about the night.

PS: UC BvS was a highly comic arcuate masterpiece, damn the haters.

I would go on and argue that this actually NEEDS a bigger setup for the setting, because this is one that most Japanese viewers will know less then zero about.
