Macross Deltoid #11 — Mopecross

June 12th, 2016

Also, someone launches some ships… for next week.

Softhouse Chara finally revealed what kind of game Planet Dragon is (and put up a trial), and apparently the answer is "Excel spreadsheet balancer." The 'mini' manual on the download page is nothing short of horrifying in its breadth. Yeesh. How'd the bad writing team end up with the okay game setup and the good writing team end up with… that?

Impressions:

As expected, a very mopey episode for moping about how much despair we're in because after a monthish (?) of fighting and over half a dozen pitched battles for their lives, they had their very first casualty. A little perspective, guys. The protagonists themselves, triangle of idiots that they are, barely even bothered to show up this week, and when they did, it was just to mope. We begin with moping, we end with moping. It's moping from wall to wall.

That was mostly a tone thing though and the focus on the death of whose-its was kept to the start and end of the episode, which is already a problem in and of itself. The actual content of this mope sandwich was just babbling nonsense. Nobody actually did a single thing this week. They stood around, explained some stuff, made a few declarations to the great space goat in the sky, explained some more stuff, and then went back to where the episode began. The big cliffhanger is that the evil empire attacked yet again, but this time, for realsies. Great. The probability that this will not survive the transition to the new season in a few weeks continues to grow.

“The protagonists themselves, triangle of idiots that they are, barely even bothered to show up this week”

Why does the space elf even exist? 11 episodes in and she’s background noise at the very best.

“They stood around, explained some stuff, made a few declarations to the great space goat in the sky, explained some more stuff, and then went back to where the episode began”

They did that for 10 weeks already, why would they change the formula NOW? We’re talking about Kawamori here, the guy who did 7, but then they had to pad 7 to run for a whole year.
