Ace Attorney #01 — Let’s Play Phoenix Wright

April 2nd, 2016

Adapt? What's that?

Impressions:

This began with the criminal at the murder scene grinning evilly and declaring he was going to frame someone, and showing who he was going to frame, so apparently we're just throwing any overtures of being a mystery straight to the wind. Further so since this was an incredibly bland straight adaptation of the first game's tutorial. The only time it wasn't being dry nothingness was when it was being imbecilicly corny. Admittedly, that's part of the fun of the games, but it's both an entirely different beast in another format, and I'm more talking about things like clues taking form as text, floating out of mouths/off evidence, and osmosing into Phoenix's face.

I don't know who this is for really. It's less an adaptation and more like someone recorded the first case and then added just barely a little more animation in places, because good lord, this is not what one would call an expressive or animated show. So I guess maybe it's for people who liked the game and just wanted to see the same thing, but with voice acting and marginally more animation. I'm pretty sure there are probably plenty of Let's Plays out there that get you about 90% of that experience. Well, probably less, because this was largely devoid of any of the humor of the games too, and decided that the only thing it needed to keep around were the montages of shocked reactions.

Next Episode:

Dead mentor.

6 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

The live action movie was rather nice.

  • Germanguy says:

Guys, watch “Inspector Columbo”. They do not start direct with the “culprit” in action at the start. Just watch him

  • JCA says:

Well, the first episode was one whole case, the first game was 5 cases long. They’re going to have to add…SOMETHING…if they want to keep that pace up. Either that they’ll stretch case 4 out to half the series, and cut case 5 entirely to “save time”.

This franchise has never particularly appealed to me honestly, is this a series you’ve played a lot of?

Not at all, although I have taken a closer look at the scripts and localization than I normally do since it has a good reputation for that and I like reading up on those kinds of things to see how other people handle stuff. I did my time on frustrating adventure games with the Monkey Island and Space Quest games in my youth. Granted, loved them, but I was a lot less grumpy as a child. I distinctly remember getting pissed and frustrated with an early case in either the first or second (tried to get into both, failed) where a piece of evidence was something like “There were two gunshots fired,” and every damn witness said “I heard a gunshot”, and it was never right until fairly late in the case when one of the statements was something like “I am sure that there was only one gunshot,” and THAT, and ONLY THAT was where it counted, despite having been applicable the entire damn thing.

And I also got stuck on a couple of the idiotic “find the right trigger to continue” non-court parts too, which was just obnoxious as hell.
