Komugi R #01 — The R is For Repugnant
January 9th, 2016
Well, at least I already assumed it was going to be godawful.
Impressions:
Jesus Christ. They warned us about the CGI (by bragging about it), but it was even worse than I had feared. But on the upside, boy, did that kill any hopes for the rest of the episode, and good god did it live up to expectations. Terrible, terrible expectations. The highlight was the random rapping girl in a hoodie and killer shades. I think she had two lines. Everything before and after that was only downhill. And god help any show where a character with two lines and about 15 seconds of screentime is the standout moment of its introductory episode.
There is no parody here. There is no irony. There is none of the incisiveness or cruelty towards its characters or subject matter that made the original what it was. There is only the standard recognition of cliches and attempting to point those out as humor. And there's hardly even that. God knows there's no budget here either for that matter. It was just twenty minutes of Girls Go To School And Are Also CGI Idols with an utterly generic, utterly unambitious, utterly brainless magical girl schtick tacked on to the end.
This is not worth anybody's time, whether or not you've watched the original OVA series. On that note, watch the original OVA series instead. The only thing that's kept me from swearing a blood oath against their kin is not yet knowing if they've messed with Koyori's lunatic unhingedness. All signs point to yes though, so it won't be unitl next week that I start making the voodoo dolls.

I don’t know how to make voodoo dolls but if you’ve got the instructions I’m more than willing to help.
