Divine Gate #01 — But… But… My Angst!

January 8th, 2016

Like tears in the rain!

Impressions:

Well, on one hand, it sort of tries to integrate its dumb game mechanics into the world instead of being a game they play. On the other, it'd clearly rather not be involved with them at all. Here's our world. The gimmick is that the characters have the cosmic powers of gods. Buuuuut that's not very interesting, right? So instead, we're going to have a painfully trite train attack bit to introduce our Jesus character, and then 20 straight minutes of aimless rambling. Oh wait, here's some tragic flashbacks to show why Angsty Spice is so angsty. Now I'm totes on board with this and invested in their interminable yammering.

Production was only a hair's breadth over cheap as hell, and there was no action in the episode to speak of, just that one brief teleport dash instakill thing that they then replayed about three times. If you're expecting action from a show about super powered people fighting, you're going to be sorely disappointed. It's difficult to say much about the protagonists as well as they existed this week almost entirely to announce their relevant traits. At least none of them had extended self-introductions straight to the camera, but they weren't actually doing anything either.

I was bored. It was a boring, meandering episode that never got off the ground at all, and I'm not sure what they think the hook that'll get people watching more of it is supposed to be.

  • Paulo27 says:

His element is Water so he… cries? A lot?

  • Sanjuro says:

How could this bore you? Didn’t his monologue about how rain makes puddles keep you hooked from the start?

  • Tolrin says:

And yet, this somehow manages to be the most positive of your reviews so far this season. Maybe their hook is just how awful everything else is.

  • The Phantom says:

When I was just about to see this show, from the title to the plot summary it reminded me of darker than black, however when I actually saw the episode I concur is f. boring and nothing like dtb.
