Yuruyuri #27 — “We Can Reference Things From A Decade Ago Too!”

October 5th, 2015

References are the punchline that only get better with repetition after all.

Impressions:

I don't really have too much more to say that I didn't about the OVAs, which were by the same (new) studio and staff. It feels like they've kind of given up, especially when they're making 10 year old Death Note references and calling that a joke. At least try to pull the whole parody routine there, not toss out a one liner nothing like anything else in your entire presentation and then pretend like nothing ever happened. Nor does it help that half the episode was a particularly half-assed king game bit. Even Princess Witches had a few more ridiculous things in it than "spin 100 times", "spin 100 times again", or "I want to be king but never get to!" and PW's ended in a hummer. Oral sex would've done nothing but improve this.

Also not helping the feeling that they've given up was how the next five minutes were about cooking, and it closed out on a bit where a random nameless redhead with the brain of a hamster was less mature than an 8 year old. Because she didn't have tissues or band aids at hand. And has the brain of a hamster. I've never had any great love for the series in the first place, but with the changing of the guard, the budget's gone to pot and it's trying harder than ever to get by on as much empty space as possible.

They try too hard to make Kyouko funny (and it doesn’t work) while Chinatsu and Yui aren’t interesting enough to carry a scene by themselves – and you always need more than just three characters to make one of these shows work.

Maybe a red-head would be a good fit, I’m just spitballing here.
