Cavalry of the Failed Knight #01 — Flame On

October 3rd, 2015

What a creative and unique setup that I haven't seen at all in the last hour.

Impressions:

And here's our second magic teenagers fighting at magic school where the protagonist walks in on the fire-based heroine half-naked and then is forced to duel her. Such uniqueness, Japan. This one does distinguish itself from the previous a little bit by focusing a bit more on the humor than the T&A (at least until the closing seconds where she mounted him and then touching his abs made her have a massive technicolor orgasm), being somewhat better directed, and more focused on the characters than the exposition. Not to a terribly great degree in any of those categories, but those are the unmistakably differences between this and the last iteration of this that I just watched thirty minutes ago. Some of the humor is decent enough, like stripping when he walks in on her naked so they'll be even, but most is more geared towards overreactions and yelling. Not so much an improvement is the weird music that often doesn't seem to be quite on the same page as everybody else, especially the particularly strange flute music during the "Now you have to live together" expositional bit, although it's pretty safe to say that it'd probably be improved overall just by getting rid of it all together.

The action is quite a bit better than its predecessor as well, but there's still plenty of room for improvement. Too many pauses or cutaways to announce what's going on. At least they're actually hitting each other with their swords instead of standing an entire first down apart and waving at the air, not to mention attacking at a rate of more than once per thirty seconds. It still would've been greatly improved by shutting the hell up, aka show don't tell. I would've liked to see more characterization of Ikki through the fight too since it was almost entirely all Stella all the time, including but not limited to her nonstop blathering over the fight.

Of the two carbon copy light novel setups, this one is the clear winner for the morning by a large margin thanks to better focus and execution on the action, and any focus at all on the characters. However, it's still pretty firmly mired in a number of bad cliches, annoying yelling trying to pass as both cute and funny, and the occasional frog-face. Handled a little more deftly than usual, but it would be well served to introduce some greater plot element besides "sanctioned fights at magic school" post haste… and get away from the magic school crap all together post post haste. Edit: Looks like Youtube muted the OP some hours after the fact. C'est la vie.
