Psychic edition.
Impressions:
I was a little surprised at the start, not so much by the wall of exposition (that I expected), but by the protagonist being a giant dick and unabashedly using his magic powers for personal gain. I’m not entirely certain how people never notice half the class having seizures every time they take a test though, not to mention super powered fights in the middle of the city with people rocketing through the air and across rivers. It’s quite a bit more of a slapstick comedy than the promos were letting on, and had some actual jokes here and there with a welcome measure of restraint. There was screaming too. And self-narration. So… so much unneeded self-narration. Learn to write for the right medium, you lazy hack.
Being a PA Works/Maeda Jun thing though, I’m sure it will take its eventual turn into the maudlin where all this wackiness is going to stick out like a sore thumb. It was already somewhat on display in parts particularly in the second half when the comedy all but disappeared, but particularly when his sister was mincing around, squealing and doing absolutely nothing but pad out the episode as boringly and obnoxiously as possible. Also, speaking of PA Works, production’s certainly better than average, but it’s not one of PA Works’s prettier or more expressive shows. Not that I’m lamenting the lack of scenery porn, but they could’ve really done a lot more to make the humor work visually.
It was… up and down. It started a lot stronger than it ended, but the start was still a bit bumpy. Enough of a pleasant surprise to give it a second look, but I already see the cracks that will quickly expand to become the standard major problems in the future, and knowing who’s in charge of this makes me very sure that they will.
