Actually, I’m… #01 — Stupid Faces

I’d be permanently traumatized-looking too if I was stuck in this show.

Impressions:

Ugh. Focus, Japan. I’m not saying that you can’t make a dramatic romantic comedy, but until you get at least competent at one of them, don’t get distracted. And those times where you narrate how romantic or super special the depth of feelings for someone or something is and then have someone yell or throw a soccer ball/pie to interrupt those awful bits is not helping. Is that supposed to be like a jump scare, but for a laugh? And what the hell was that insert song in the middle supposed to even be? Good god. Here’s another helpful hint. The following ten minutes shouldn’t be leading up to the hook you used in the opening minute of the episode.

It’s another comedy that aimed for volume among all else, and it didn’t even do a decent job of staying focused on that with long asides to try to mash at the emotional buttons. It did a little bit with the visuals to support it, but the direction was all over the place and pacing was constantly dragging unneeded exposition behind it, making it move at a snal’s pace because everyone had to narrate everything happening in front of their faces. But at least the characters constantly announced exactly how they felt! Nothing makes me feel more involved emotionally than being treated like an imbecile. And where was it all leading up to? Being friends with Jesusette, which moves her so much because friendship. Get over it, Japan.
