Show By Rock! #05 — Excuse Me, I’d Like to Go Save Lives Now

May 3rd, 2015

But what about our schedule!?

Impressions:

At least they finally remembered that they have giant evil skeletons, although from the episode, you might not realize it. I think my favorite awful moment was when Blondie invited the cat to her lair, proceeded to show her that the internet exists, and then decided that was enough and time for a break. Seriously. You can watch streamed concerts here. You can read things people are posting here. Okay. That’s enough ‘research,’ time to leave. The rest of the episode took a similar approach to the giant skeleton monsters, with them never actually showing up at all while they faffed about on the edge of them.

Things then shifted in a weird direction in the second half. I guess I never really considered having a talking guitar strange in the setting, but apparently it’s totally super stunning and shakes the foundation of trust yada yada eye rolling motions etc etc. And then they find out they’re sharing a dressing room with lesbian mermaids that float in the air. Again, not seeing how a magical talking guitar is the earth shattering kaboom. The entire ending bit was also pretty awful. “I want to save their lives.” “But what about our concert!?” “LIVES.” So then they teleport to the scene of the attack, only to get there long after the monster left, then immediately forgot they can teleport and had to run back, just to get there too late for that too. And somehow, we’re supposed to feel bad because… not even about the concert, but that she might leave some day and never told them. Not because she ruined their concert (still would be pissy). Not because she’s obeying the commands of a guitar to eradicate evil. Not because she has a magical talking guitar. But because one day, maybe she’ll move away, and she never told anybody about that. Jesus christ. Pick your godawful melodrama battles to fight. This was not the right one.

Next Episode:

Beach, hot springs, ugh.

This episode struck me with the cruel realization that we’ll never hear Batman talk.
