Afterschool Pleiades #01 — *stare*

What? Again?

Impressions:

Has Japan just completely forgotten how a hook works? Why does this begin with 50 seconds of staring at someone staring at the sky? You might think, what with having an OVA that predates this, they might just jump right in, but no. It was the first two episodes of that (and let’s remember that those episodes were 4.5 minutes long) stretched out to fill an entire 20 minute span. I literally mean that too. I’m pretty sure they reused a bunch of the art, shots, and animation. And how to they pad out the time? Staring at the sky. The protagonist talking about how Blithey McEverylead she is. Staring at people. Marveling at the wonder that is staring at the goddamned sky. Marveling at how wonderful and warm and special magical sparklies are. And staring. Then their big battle at the end against… a sparklie. But stunning twist, there’s an anti-sparklie too! And it’s anti! Anti everything that girls in friendship club are!

So if you thought that vapid OVA they already made of this was great, but there was just too much going on it, then good news for you, because now there’s even less happening in twice the time and ten times more staring into space. This crap’s gotta last at least a season after all. We wouldn’t want to blow our load too early with the barest hint of anything even slightly off the beaten path, or even study the beaten path to understand why the things that have successfully trodden it were successful. No, siree. We’ve got our template. World’s most boring girl joins magical girls in magical friendship club with with magical pet and magical antagonist who is already falling prey to girl-Jesus’s magical friendship abilities. Way to churn another one out, industry.

Next Episode:

More of the same.
