Yada Yada Boy Love #01 — The Joke is Penises

And a wombat. That’s the other joke.

Impressions:

Unfortunately, if you know word one about this show, you’ve already head the greatest joke that it’s going to bring to the table. “A magical girl show… with boys!?” It sounds like a bad Rob Schneider vehicle from ten years ago. Yeah, it’s that kind of parody. The kind where they made a totally generic magical girl show, gender swapped the cast, and… that’s it. About 5% satire and 95% imitation. Yeah, there are dumb mascot animals, they make moronic poses, wear stupid-looking skirts, and shoot hearts. That’s just what they do in magical girl shows. You’ve successfully (and explicitly) pointed out that it’s pretty stupid and then proceeded to blithely do it anyway. You need to at least then throw a pie, make a stupid face, kick someone in the balls, something. If not, you’re being what you mocked. It’s not a joke, although it could be a cry for help.

Well, to be more accurate, more like 5% satire, 45% imitation, and 50% padding. In the first episode. Hell, the entire first two minutes, the place where you’d think they’d want to hook you, are two guys sitting in a bath blathering on about the trivialities of their lives. Is this really you putting your best foot forward? If not, then why did you do it? The aforementioned problems with it imitating over mocking come up here too, as it’s not enough to just do the stupid thing, but one must also announce the cliche, explain that it’s a cliche, and then shout or otherwise overreact to how ridiculous the cliche is. It’s not what one could call snappy nor do the jokes (such as they are) come at a quick enough pace to excuse the humorless ones in favor of the (nonexistent) good ones.

Little stands out on the technical side of things. It’s certainly not visually interesting nor ambitious in the slightest, and does abuse the lingering shots of nada along with speedlines, so it’s a safe bet it’s not going to get much better. I appreciated the BGM being a bit more subdued after yesterday’s auditory onslaught, although it does have the obligatory boy band pop ED, largely because all shows of 100% male casts must and god help us if we don’t imitate as much as absolutely possible.

It’s just a cliche magical girl show with boys. That’s both the premise and very nearly the sum total of the jokes. Don’t expect a second word from me on the matter.

Next Episode:

Navel.
