Akame #08 — Transformations for Everybody!

August 24th, 2014

Everyone knows slapping a water jet stops it.

Impressions:

Unlike the last big action episode a couple weeks ago, this one was doing its best Shounen Jump imitation. Spend most of the time glaring at or talking to each other, get one good punch in, have a damn transformation, get hit one more time again, okay whoa, that’s enough action for the episode guys. Budget was badly lacking and the pacing was just a disaster. Nothing could be said or done without everybody stopping and either announcing it for a minute or two, or having someone silently narrate to themselves what was happening in front of their faces, or sometimes occasionally just stopping and staring at each other. And then, of course, right before Aquaman’s death, he had to launch into a length flashback as they try a traditional eleventh hour attempt to give him depth or something. Even when it did try, it could hardly go a few seconds without resorting to speedlines or the “random clashes across the screen” form of ‘action.’

It takes about fourteen uninspired minutes to get to that point, which means the remaining eight are spent on oohing and aawing over how suddenly badass the other guy is, before a transformation scene and killing him with one ridiculous punch. I guess at least we were spared an overly long death scene and accompanying flashback for Pompadour, but that’s about the only thing that was only drawn out instead of exceedingly drawn out. I’m sure we’ll get more maudlin next week. I guess at least the bad slapstick in the middle of things mostly took another backseat too. That’s… some slight comfort, I suppose?

Next Episode:

Esdy’s gang.

  • Atmo says:

Slapstick will be back full power, in this next episode. Brace yourselves for pain and burns.

  • Sanjuro says:

Pompadour was one of the few characters I liked. If only MC-kun told him his opponent was dangerous a few seconds before.

  • Yue says:

Unless Incursio allows the user to dragon-morph, it’s visually unimpressive.
