Rail Wars #01 — Padding in Action
July 3rd, 2014
 Â
It’s rare to see it so obviously done.
Impressions:
If you watched the 10 minute pre-air thing, apparently that was taken from random bits of the episode with various scenes cut/shortened, not just the first 10 minutes. That… kind of overwhelmed the entire thing for me. Once I realized that I’d be watching the exact same thing that I had put on in the background while working (ie, when I was sorting caps during the repeated start/OP), but this time padded out to twice the length with no additional meaninful content and with the exciting climax at the ending being what was in the promos, my attention quickly wandered and I started bitching about translation tools/practices on IRC instead of paying attention. It was probably a better use of my time.
If you watched the promos, you’ve already seen 80% of the most exciting ten seconds of the show. The only surprise was that the male sidekick can also kick people’s asses and is competent. Production’s middle of the road with an unhealthy but unsurprising fascination with CGI trains, yet no multi-track drifting, so the most entertaining CGI train related thing I’ve watched in the past five years continues to be that weird doujin game series. The characters all fall into their little pigeonholes, the feisty tomboy, the ditzy titmonster, the putupon nice guy earnest protagonist who can do no wrong but always ends up in compromising situations yada yada yada. There’s not an adventurous or creative bone in its body.
It mostly just seems like it’s trying to hit a lot of bases in the hopes that something will stick. Team of teenagers, CGI trains, groping and looking up skirts then being called a pervert, action, etc, but isn’t focusing on any one of them enough for it to actually be the show’s forte or pitching point. And of course, that they released this exact episode, only 10 minutes shorter, says a lot for the pacing as well. I guess I just don’t know what to say one could or should watch this for as it really lacks any particularly defining qualities besides slightly more CGI trains than usual. Â
Well, and the awful rap ED.
Next Episode:
People’s heads.

Is this going to have train vs train raids? because I would certainly like that even if it sounds ridiculous. Aww nm who cares I will watch this, I love trains anyway.
