I’m probably more surprised than you.

Impressions:

I had to go back and check the staffing for this show, but to my shock, Silver Link still has nothing to do with it. There’s all the usual Silver Link things, playing with the most pastel backgrounds, random polka dots, people dancing around in the background with signs and silly faces… But this is the same director who’s been crapping out zero budget garbage for JC Staff (mostly Bakuman) for the last half decade after a couple successes with Honey and Clover and Nodame. Apparently the stars aligned and someone somewhere decided that this would be getting extra attention, effort, and a budget far beyond other shows of its ilk. And then someone decided for an eyecatch to have two stuffed animals having sex doggy style.

This is a show of many, many confusing questions, the least of which involves the really, really half-assed job they did drawing a female and then calling it a male, although I guess that’s really nothing new. Leaving aside the bugbear of angular faces, the direction’s expressive, production’s solid, exposition’s not minimal but nowhere near as bad as most shows and the episode keeps moving steadily forward with a lot of quick incidental gags instead of calling the shouting or silly faces the punchline iteslf, and it gives a quick once over of a relatively large cast incidental to the main plot thrust of getting Anxiety Attack Girl Boy back into a dress and reunited with his one true love.

I guess I’m just kind of surprised at how decently executed this was on just about every front. Well, aside from the plushy sex eyecatch, but even that’s going to be more of a lasting impression than many shows so far have left.
