Hanayamata #01 — “I’m Feeling Happy”
July 7th, 2014

That makes one of us, Zooglu.
Impressions:
The first half was trying to say the least. The sum and total is “I am plain. Plain. Plain. Plain. I am a flat explanse of land with few trees.  I am sooooooooo plain. I can’t do or try aaaaaaaaaaaaanything.” Even just thinking about it bores me. And of course, all singing and dancing must be accompanied by tornados of cherry petals and solar flares of bloom. Because idols dancing is the most magical and romantic and specialist and greatest and foreheadest thing ever and are the answer to making your teenage life full of everything that you ever wanted. It’s not subtle, but I guess when you spend most of the episode having a character self-narrate how she’s feeling to the audience, that goes without saying.
Granted, this got a lot further than Locodol in getting the director, animator, etc on board with the whole still-do-an-idol-show-but-let’s-call-it-something-slightly-different schtick, and there’s absolutely a lot more talent and effort here than there. Still, there’s not enough focus on the comedy to call that the show’s selling point and for all its attempts to make me sympathize or bond with the characters, I just wanted them euthanized. The protagonist is in need of a hard slap at the absolute best of times and the shrill sugar-addled alien thing with a helicopter landing pad makes my ears hurt. The latter was preferable to the former, but only because they at least tried to make her funny.
Next Episode:
More bloom! More sunsets!
