Does anybody even remember Guardian Hearts?
Impressions:
An episode of two halves, but both lacking in different ways. The first half was just plain dull as all hell. There was a moment or two when the director put some effort in, or at least said “I want this scene of her hair blowing in the cherry petals overanimated as hell,” but yeesh. One might think it was a PA Works show from how absolutely bloody nothing happened at all and all the soothing music trying to put me to sleep.
At about the halfway point, things took a turn for the stupid and it just kept double down more and more on that. It’s very reminiscent of Guardian Hearts (or I guess KoreZon for you more modern kids) in the way its trying to sell itself as a parody by slopping together as many different cliches as possible and go “This is bonkers, guys.” But to go back to the GH intro (and it’s not even a good OVA), that was significantly weirder and actual parody instead of just aping the cliches. They did kick off the stupidity almost decently with the protagonist showing a degree of competence and trying to beat one of them with a bat for shooting beams at him, eg the inklings of maybe some light hearted action, but the action never materialized past some beams and they ruined it anyway with all the crying and groping that soon followed. It also never ramped up to be truly humorous stupidity instead of the same kind already found in… well, pretty much any kind of magical girlfriend harem show around.
Too much bad intro and whatever the hell the first half was supposed to be, not enough… well, I guess it’s supposed to be mostly a comedy. Production’s about middling without any of the clever direction Silver Link sometimes shows. I guess the standout feature is that in a rare feat, the self-narrating protagonist ends up being one of the less obnoxious characters in the harem show, but that’s mostly because so many of the other characters are picking up the slack.Â
Next Episode:
If you’re reading this, then I’ve forgotten to change the template.

“Does anybody even remember Guardian Hearts?”
The first thing I think when I see this review’s title is: “Whoa, someone actually remember Guardian Hearts”
