Aldnoah.Zero #01 — Everyone Hates New Orleans

July 5th, 2014

Yeah, screw those Cajuns for being all Cajuny!

Impressions:

What truly worries me is that they probably think that intro with the princess dancing about and Random Teen being awkward and nervously fumbling for words before panning out to reveal that they’re in a spaceship was a hook. Because after that, they switch gears to talking about how someone wants their eggs cooked and then straight from there into a history lesson. And then, excitement supposedly established, it gets boring. And it stays that way right up until the missiles and orbital bombardment starts. Most shows would begin with that. I couldn’t even tell you how most of the characters even tied into goddamned anything. The princess and her boy toy, maybe, but the rest are just, like… some random kids that the camera stopped on and then forgot about again once things started happening. Hell, what was presumably the main character was checking the price of eggs when things kicked off. That is how connected he was to anything going on.

It was not a strong beginning in the slightest. It took 16 minutes to get anywhere at all, and again, it only got as far as what many of these kinds of shows cover in their opening expository montages. It didn’t even do a convincing job that the princess was killed in that little farce. Characters are practically nonexistent too and I strongly suspect it’s going to be trying to juggle its far too large cast. Production is middling at best, although bloody nothing goes on for the vast majority of the episode anyway, not making it at all clear where it’s going to go from here. I suspect, as usual, that the answer is probably close to nowhere.

  • The Phantom says:

I saw the princess, I saw stupidhead with his sister, and was still wondering what stupid reason they will use to put magical girlfriend-princess into stupidhead house when she apparently died, hopefully SHE WILL NOT return next episode with amnesia inside stupidhead house, please Japan, PLEASE.

    • FlameStrike says:

The odds of this NOT happening seem lower then the odds of it happening… *sigh* Japan.

  • Anon says:

I think, she is dead for good. We are talking about Urubuci Gen. He is on the Dark Side.

  • Anon says:

    The Two MC’s?

Nr 1: he will surly drive an MARS Mecha

perhaps even the Top Notch Prototype version

The 2nd will be the schoolboys, but then with waht kind of Lowpower mecha? Perhaps he get a change to pilot one of the MARS Mecha somehow

  • Anon says:

They attacked one of our Train lines, we want Revenge. Let’s declare war on Korea!!!

You dont need to be a History Expert, but you see the similar points?

  • V1cious says:

They colony dropped half of the freaking world. How can you say it’s going nowhere?

    • Anonymous says:

Remember, he said there were 16 minutes of “nothing” before that. Screw knowing any of the chars, we have to have violence with no context NOW

      • Aroduc says:

You knew any of the characters after those 16 minutes?

        • UltimaLuminaire says:

          Yes. It was horrible.

        • Anonymous says:

Not a lot, but *shock horror*, maybe the show wants us to learn about them over time. If they dumped on us on their character motivations and personalities at the start, you would have bitched that it was too much at once.

        • Aroduc says:

Then we’re in agreement. In that span, we learned very little and nothing happened.

        • UltimaLuminaire says:

I’m guessing you’re a fan of Gundam Seed, Gundam 00, and Valvrave. I wish you happy animu watching, friendo.

  • Anonymous says:

Except for the things that did happen.

  • LegoTechnic says:

I don’t know, I thought it was a decent start. Animation quality was higher than anything I’ve watched this season (which isn’t everything admittedly), the supposed MC is very deadpan which is unusual in a genre full of shouty-McHotBlood SAVE MY FRIEND characters, and the premise had a decent amount of “showing” and not complete straight-up “telling”, saving us from standard info speech-dumps like so many others.

Maybe I’m just a terrible person, but seeing New Orleans of all places to be singled out for the animation of the nuclear bomb type explosion just made me roll my eyes. Yes, I see what you did there, Japan.
