Soul Eater Not! #01 — Beware the Headknife

April 8th, 2014

What’s bizarre is that the headknife didn’t seem to be a joke as far as the show was concerned.

Impressions:

Ah. This is apparently where all the imbeciles for Tuesday have gathered. It was quite a yank on the choke chain going from Black Bullet to a show where characters can’t help but explain (to nobody) that the city they’re looking out over is in fact, a city, or after arriving at the school they already said they were going to, that this is indeed, that school. I was confused too because Yale also has a giant masturbating sun, but it was far too clean to be New Haven, so I guess it’s a good thing they cleared that up.

The show’s trying to do a lot and it’s hard to tell what the focus is supposed to be. The animation’s better than average, although I’m not sure why. The action’s not good enough to be worth watching it for that. There’s not really any humor to speak of, so that’s not the draw either. That only really leaves “lesbians go to school,” a premise only seen about five hundred and sixty eight times before without even the benefit of giving them personalities or trying to make it funny, salacious, anything. Just “they’re friends.” One’s gimmick, as stated about sixteen times, is that she’s plain. Not… that red character from some show I forget plain, just plain. Another’s is that she’s stupider than the one who already spent the first half of the show pointing at things and announcing what they were. Was it budget day at the personality shack or something? And if you weren’t afraid it was devoid enough of thought, the promo for next week has them becoming waitresses.

That also begs the question as to why it’s associated with Soul Eater’s world at all, let alone why it has all the cameos jammed in there and feels the need to explain everything. If it’s just for cockteasing the existing fans, why is it re-explaining everything? Or explaining it at all for that matter? If the only answer is “to keep the brand alive” as it seems to be, that doesn’t bode well because it’s about all this episode had going for it. “Pseudo-lesbians do nothing” does explain the masturbating sun though.

Next Episode:

Sleeping together and being waitresses.

I’ll have no moe in my mako thank you.

The manga is mediocre at best, nothing to see here move on.

  • Clarste says:

You forgot to change the template.

I’m pretty sure the headknife was a joke, but they forgot to point it out and shout like anime is obligated to do with its jokes.

    • Aroduc says:

It was more than that though. There was even a remark about how awesome it was without the slightest trace of irony, like we were meant to be impressed or something. I can’t even tell what Japan thinks is TOO stupid sometimes, especially not with this one.

      • Clarste says:

The remark was made by the stupid character though, so you have to take it with a grain of salt.

they weren’t lying….so nope. I’ll be back when their clothes come off.

  • Longhaul says:

The fight was rather well animated, don’t really care that the character designs had the moe dial turned up a notch.

  • TheElizander says:

    Soul eater NOPE!

I still don’t understand why this needed an anime adaption when the ending of the original Soul Eater anime was rushed.
