Mushishi #28 — Taking the Piss

April 4th, 2014

Spurious rigor in numbering is my passive-aggressive way of acting out against sequels to things I didn’t watch.

Often also things I did.

Impressions:

So here we are again, with not one but two sequels today to shows that failed to hold my interest. While I have the ever-futile hope that something might have changed for the better or have taken some manner of bizarre Futakoi Alternative turn, when they almost invariably haven’t, who cares what I have to say about ’em? They are strange and alien things that I cannot see the appeal of.

And from that bit of mea culpa, you can safely assume that it hasn’t changed from what I remember and that I still don’t see the appeal at all. Most of it is still just barely animated exposition, primarily centered around headshots and stills; next to no characters actually doing anything, and entirely them just explaining things, mostly simply to the cameras voices in their heads. There was a point where they just glossed over “A bunch of guys went crazy from drinking the magic firewater.” Wouldn’t that be something you’d want to, you know, show? If you’re really worried that the point didn’t get across, paraphrase.

But no. They poured some disturbingly yellow ‘liquor’ every now and then, and that was about the most dynamic thing that happened. The episode gets more amusing if you imagine they are just whipping it out and having a piss whenever it makes an appearance. Oh wait, he also wrestled a jug away from baby tentacle monsters. I’ve heard that you’re supposed to soak in the atmosphere or something, but I suspect that’s code for “get high to and listen to the music.” Besides, I only soak in two things; hot tubs, and the entrails of my slain enemies to gain their courage, and there have been very few of the former lately.

5 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

Tasteless jokes for a tasteful show feel kinda misplaced, even for you. I guess you were just that bored.

    • Dave Baranyi says:

It’s a boring show, no matter how many people love it to death.

    • Aroduc says:

Oh please. They’re dribbling yellow liquid onto hair monsters.

There are depths that I have not even begun to delve.

  • The Phantom says:

It was a beautiful episode, I certainly loved it.
