Mekaku City Actors #01 — Same as it Ever Was

Does Shinbo even show up for these things?

Thanks, for posting it before it even aired, Chinese Crunchyroll!

Impressions:

Time for the seasonal rant about Shinbo, I guess. Or we can just skip it. If you’ve seen any Shinbo show from the past five years or so, barring maybe Hidamari, you’ve seen this one. This one brings the addition of light synthesis to the female side of the interminable conversation that goes nowhere and is far less clever and interesting than Shinbo clearly thinks it is. Well, and obnoxiously synthy music too, which is kind of weird since this thing comes from music to begin with, so you’d think they’d pay special attention to that. They did not.

Otherwise, all your favorites are here; quick cuts to hide the lack of animation, close ups of eyes, copious distance shots, wide angle view of room with ‘wackyness’ on the wall behind person at computer, the same head-turning animation and sound effects with it that he’s been using since 2007, so on and so forth. The rest of the episode is just laborious, which probably isn’t surprising since it’s a 3 minute song stretched out to a 20 minute episode, but with the fear of actually adding anything, so there’s about fifteen minutes of teenagers BSing at each other along plus all the usual Japanese media proclivity to simply announce things about themselves, the situation, or events in front of them instead of allowing the story and characters to organically unfold. So I guess if you haven’t had enough of Shinbo’s usual strain of self-indulgent teenage rambling, then here’s some more substanceless tripe.

    good…

  • V1cious says:

For once I actually agree with you. This first episode was pretentious nonsense. I wonder if Shinbo has finally run out of ideas.

  • anon999 says:

Good god, Shinbou. Learn from your mistakes.

  • TheElizander says:

The main is same araragi and vocaloids… insurance will be a success.

  • CTT says:

I love the series too much to pass up the anime, especially since I want a conclusive ending dammit, but I get all your complaints. I’ve almost 10 minutes in and I’m already tired of melodrama that’s taken slightly too far to be funny, head tilting, close ups of eyes, and weird imagery.

  • algorithm says:

That would be a lot more bearable muted.
