Spaced Andy #02 — Losing Definition

January 11th, 2014

I bet I know which scene was last in the production order.

Quasi-Impressions:

I left the TV on in the background as I am wont to do when working on things, and the promo for this episode kept playing and all I could think was “Ye gods, I am not looking forward to this.” This is the most exciting or funniest thing in the episode? This is the best thing in it to promote it? Unless you count that boinging noise, there wasn’t even a joke. I wasn’t sold on the first episode, but that did absolutely nothing to make me look forward to this one. Someone on the production staff also tweeted this week “Please watch until at least episode 4 (3 maybe?) before making up your mind,” which begs the question of why they put out a month of episodes that they suspected people wouldn’t like.

It was pretty indicative of it too. I don’t even know why they introduced the new character either. She showed up for about 30 seconds at the start, 60 more seconds in middle (where she lost pretty much all definition every time she moved) and vanished entirely again. I couldn’t even defend that as an in-between frame either as it’s just sticking out there being ugly between actually drawn close-ups of her face, or stylistic since nobody else devolved into a blocky monster as they moved, wormholes notwithstanding. The production was otherwise probably better than last week, or at least more consistent, but it was also reversed, with the blathering and stills coming at the end of the episode instead of the start, so maybe they’re just tricking my brain.

I’m not sure that the blathering about ramen is any kind of improvement over boobs and asses. Maybe I’m not Japanese enough to see the comedy inherent in ramen. I’m not sure I could point out where the comedy was even supposed to be though other than Dandy spazzing out. It beats being yelled at, or the gong and splash screen of your traditional Jump comedy, but even that was all but absent in the latter going besides some minor at best sight gags. I’m also pretty sure this was a Galaxy Angel episode, except they did it in 10 minutes and Milfie probably destroyed the world. I wonder if I could just cover that and call it this.

There is no show not made better by adding Galaxy Angel girls, unless it’s Galaxy Angel Rune, which never happened anyway.

That was actually nowhere as bad as you put it for once.
