Robot Girls Z #01-03 — The Fishless Zombie Apocalypse

January 4th, 2014

Frankly, there’s been worse plans from far more serious shows.

This is some kind of web… thing Toei’s doing. Three ‘broadcasts’ of three ‘ten minute’ episodes each, although for Toei, 10+10+10 = 24, which makes sense when there’s commercials or you’re going to play the OP/ED every episode like a terrestrial broadcast, but not so much when there’s not. I did a cursory check to see if the second and third had been dated yet, but didn’t see anything, so, uh… whenever.

As someone who could take or leave giant robots, mostly leave them, I’m certainly not this show’s target audience, and I’m sure that a billion of the references went over my head or were just reduced to “whoever designed that character must been tripping on LSD that went bad back in the 80s, or clearly has some lingering issues with Cutman” On the other hand, there’s a lot of actual parody here instead of just throwing out a reference and pissing off as Japan is especially wont to do. There were those too, mind you, as I’m sure the superfans will be sure to squeal over and clap their hands like excited harp seals. It also helped that Toei seems to have given this a very healthy budget to work with so they weren’t stingy with using the visuals to really sell the zany and spasticness, something that always helps when you have a bunch of random super powered… things… running around engaging in mass destruction for comedic purposes.

It was mostly a pretty fun watch overall. Not compelling, but well-executed gag and slapstick comedy. Maybe a little loud and exhausting after the other two shows I watched this morning put me into a torpor, but the kind of spastic heavily visual slapstick that I prefer to see over being yelled at. Well animated, actual jokes extending beyond the realm of fans of robot shows from decades ago, and uses the visuals well as the main part of the humor. The third segment/episode/whatever-you-want-to-call-it did lose me a bit because it featured a hell of a lot less destruction, a lot more yelling, and was pretty blatant about most of it just being an excuse to put them all in bikinis, but there have certainly been thinner excuses with a lot less effort put into them.

And that concludes the highlight of this season!! … and the last three, maybe? *sigh*

  • PhotonBeam says:

Shin Mazinger was really good though. Too bad we’ll not be getting a sequel to that instead.

With that said, I still don’t mind this fun little tribute. I just hope this is a prelude to more Mazinger related material.
