White Album 2 #01 — Violins, Pianos, and Monologues

October 5th, 2013

My favoritest things in the whole world!

Here’s a little hint for any budding directors out there. It may be a good idea to make sure that you have the barest knowledge of what you’re directing. If you’re going to do a rock concert that the audience is super into and rocking out, then perhaps a moment of ‘tension’ where everyone is completely silent(ly rocking out) before erupting into thunderous applause is not appropriate. A secondary hint is that just because something is off screen or behind a wall, does not mean that it has stopped existing. If you’re going to include a large piece of wood as a prop, you should probably keep track of that.

Why yes, if those observations didn’t make it clear, I was bored. The ridiculous concert to start seguing straight into the boring internal protagonist monologue introduction was not an exciting beginning and most of the rest was just a tour around the girls and more self-narration. I expected melodrama and melodrama it was in the purest sense of the word. They do love their violins, piano, and bloom. What they don’t love is a damn thing happening. Or animating things really. Nothing like long shots of unrelated scenery that really scream "We had no idea what to put here, so check out this pretty picture one of our artists drew. We’re hanging it on the fridge later!"

No surprises here, I guess. Drama, nothing happening, look at how special these girls are because BLOOM, and a whole lot of blandosity. Neither Milquetoasty or Insecury appeal to me in the slightest, and since neither did a damn thing anyway, there’s even less reason to care. The one character who seemed like she might be the only thing I could latch onto in the show was the fist bump girl at the start (mainly for having the confidence and wherewithal to fist bump) and she spent the rest of the episode asleep. I guess we have more in common than I thought.
