Not Rozen Maiden Zurückspulen #02 — “Have Some Jun!”

July 11th, 2013

No thank you.

Impressions:

How thoroughly unpleasant. Everything that the first episode’s lightning speed recap was, this wasn’t. I don’t even know what kind of twisted mind thinks to itself, "Okay, we’ve got our premise with gothic dolls fighting each other… but what if we didn’t? I mean, what everyone really wants to see is the pathetic loser whose only reason for existing in the story is to serve tea to miniature cursed golems, right?" Even the setup is like a bad Marvel or DC What-If story. "What if Jun turned down this crap?" He’d grow up to be the same unlikeable antisocial putz that he was before. Normally, this is where someone with a brain would step in and say "Are you sure anybody wants to see that?" but instead, here’s an entire episode of him being bored and gasping over how creepy dolls are. You were beaten to that punch a few centuries ago, Deen, not to mention by your own predecessor in this series.

So no, I am not amused nor entertained by this turn of events. It was slow, uneventful, boring, full of just empty space of nothing happening and about a character ancillary to the show at the best of times mostly feeling sorry for himself. I’d rather have watched a what-if story about if Kun-kun had become their master. At least that might have involved the things that people actually give a crap about in this franchise at some point. Twenty goddamned minutes of Jun being morose and pathetic… again… is just about last on my list of things I give a crap about. And no, I do not give a crap if it was in the source. That’s no excuse for being this boring or treading the exact same ground as it already has… but now in adult form!

Next Episode:

Jun knits!

*Cue Seinfeld music* It’s a show about dolls and nothing, but mostly nothing!

That’s what killed the first season for me, Jun was a whiny brat. I liked the first episode because Jun just seemed to be along for the ride without much objection but if he’s back to his old tricks I don’t think I’ll bother.
