Fantasista Doll #01 — Naked Time

July 6th, 2013

Around the halfway point, characters simply stop wearing anything but a slip and a smile.

Impressions:

Goddamned finally. A bishie with a monocle. And a cape. A show that finally gets me.

Anyway, rounding out the card-based magical girl shows (ye lords, are there seriously three?) but by no means the end of the Saturday magical girls with yet more coming next week, this one probably edges out Magical Ruby for being the squeakiest. You know, Japan, you don’t need to spend half (or more!) of every first episode establishing that the main character is Captain Everyteen from Normalsville, USA Japan. I’m cool with just taking it at face value and getting right to the good stuff. That could also mean that maybe you could just skip over embarrassing things you inevitably introduce like amnesia and/or a shadow past as you are forever wont to do. Another thing you should probably quit doing, Japan? Explicitly pointing out how bad the protagonists are. Yeah, yeah. I’m sure you’re thinking to yourself "I can show how much they’ve grown!" but let’s start somewhere slightly above "Barely able to walk and breathe at the same time." I’m not even sure she headbutted the pink girl on purpose. At least Magical Doll Prime is competent, destructive, and emotionally manipulative, even if in this case that’s like trying to mold porridge.

Thankfully, it does pick up a bit after the dull as hell start, but the fight was too short and too off screen to be any exciting. It’s incredibly formulaic, right down to Not-Tuxedo Mask perched in the moonlight, even if it is borrowing part of the formula from something more like Sekirei by way of Kamidori what with dressing up the otherwise eerily white unclothed harem. And yes, this is undoubtedly a lesbian harem. The very first thing they do when they’re all summoned is strip naked and climb into the bath together. Disturbingly close to each other too, making me wonder where all their legs are. I can only assume their thighs are already wrapped around each other.

There’s little to say about the technical side. It’s boring, but not horrible or great. Music never stood out. Neither art nor animation did anything notable either way, which is probably a bad thing for an epsiode meant to hook the audience, but it at least managed to more or less match the other yuck so far today, Kaminai notwithstanding.

Next Episode:

Pretty magical girl dressup.
