Yuyushiki #01 — CHECK OUT THESE LEGS!
April 9th, 2013
Thhis show spends its budget in strange ways.
Impressions:
I think there’s a leg fetishist on staff. It cuts to just their legs a couple times and the animation suddenly kicks into overdrive. It’s… a little creepy. On the upside, it does move along pretty well from one joke to the next. On the down side, besides the leg fetishism, the direction isn’t doing the already relatively poor jokes any favors. At probably its lowest point, the punchline to them playing shiritori, reaching a food word, then one going "I wanna eat that." The average commercial has more well-thought out humor than that.
Unlike its better-executed brethren in the four-panel-comic adaptation world, the brackets around each segment are very plainly obvious with zero connection or transition between them, especially with so many of the jokes continuing to be a nonsequitor at the end of the segment. That kind of comedy is not something that should be done to a consistent and predictible rhythm. It also slots itself right into that generic four-panel art style without so much as blinking an eye, right down to the utterly generic splash background for punchlines. I can’t say that I find the characters all that appealing either. Yu-Pink is spunky-silly, Yu-Purple is spacey-silly, Yu-Yellow is the straight man. The first two also tend to be rather loud and ear piercing when they speak in harmony, which is all too often.
So meh. It’s a comedy that really didn’t make me laugh at anything but the weird leg focus and maybe just how stereotypically 4-panel-adaptation it is in nearly every way. I’ve seen worse (I think…), but the poor jokes and annoying characters didn’t exactly make a compelling argument that things are going to improve.
