Gargantia #03 — Lesbian Pirate Surfer Queen

April 21st, 2013

Yeah. That fits right in.

Impressions:

Maybe the addition of a lesbian pirate surfer queen on a lobster robot will quell any misguided notions that this is something that had any serious thought put into it and will explore anything but the most superficial themes in extra talky form because look at these tits and lesbians, man, but I have my doubts. I also feel like someone needs to explain basic physics to them, because that part where the little slave speedboats were trying to pull via cables on their prows and came to a dead halt and kept tugging in place churning water showed a reckless disregard for what Bill Nye fought Professor Nemesis to teach us all.

But anyway on to the exceedingly, exceedingly dull other 15 minutes of the episode that didn’t involve mostly stationary CG boats with explosions literally just plopped right on top of them and some of the worst military planning since the last time I watched any Japanese show involving military ‘planning.’ Predictibly, we got not only a shout of "Red, you stupidhead!" but a sitdown to explain that pirates are people too before we then turn around and start shelling them. I feel like this moral lesson needs some work. Not that I would have liked it had they continued the temper tantrum approach to it like they started it out as either, mind you, but even with the two week gap, the lack of any actual conflict between characters in these episodes is making them very, very dull affairs of characters just talking at each other while the rest nod. Which is kind of ironic considering the invincible giant robot at the center of it, but that’s so far mostly been a conversation piece when it’s not committing genocide against space snails, pirates, or mounting lesbian pirate surfer queens.

If you want to focus on Waterworld pirates vs robot, fine. Drop all the wafer-thin preaching (and the obnoxious cutesy girl), make the robot a little less invincible, and give the protagonist a personality so it’s actually interesting. If you want to just preach dimestore nonsense about peace, love, and understanding, I’m probably going to just wonder where the lesbian pirate surfer queen fits into that.

12 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

Man, if I were Red, I’d make sure to beat the shit out of the mofo blondie who’s all about “getting rid of the kid and save the robot”. Such a dickhead.

On other note, if I were Red, I’d totally tap Bellows’ ass instead of the lame UPS chick. If not, then I’d settle for the lesbian surfer pirate queen and my effort to turn her to the straight path will undoubtedly be a much better plot than the current one.

So early in the ep the queen has her little harem all chained up and they look pretty unhappy, but later they stand up to eagerly fight at her side and try to rescue her from being NTRed by the Red Menace.

Is it just casual S&M play or something?

Now, that’s the kind of show you need to review more often.

  • The Phantom says:

I’m not sure about where this series is going (and dont want spoilers), but I believe this is the series has shown the most action of all series airing now.

I believe that they have done a decent effort with this show, certainly far from great but good enough to be entertaining, and much better than most other shows airing right now.

      You watching DeSu or SnK?

      • The Phantom says:

Titan and devil survivor right? Yes watching both, Titan is not exactly what I could call an action show, male lead is an annoying whinny POS, but the setup and plot so far are excellent, Devil Survivor has potential it just have to go the evil path :D

But this episode was obviously about the cultural difference between the space man and the people on the boat, not about how wonderful the boat people are, or even whether or not they’re right. Like, completely obviously.

“make the robot a little less invincible, and give the protagonist a personality so it’s actually interesting”
How and why this robot should be weaker when it’s advanced technologically?
And give Ledo some time, he was cold soldier whole his life.

  • Freeter says:

Sugitabot is the only thing keeping me watching.

I’m actually rooting for Urobutcher to work his magic and have the entire cast Senmetsu’d. They’re all terrible.

    1) Shoutout to team(rocket)lesbian blasting off again via giant swing

2)It took 3 episodes for the waterworld knockoffs to realise that the bloody robot is stronger than their whole fleet, but what irked me was the elders kept running their mouths like they were going to something to the pilot BEFORE AND AFTER he decimated the pirate fleet. What was they gonna do, beat the bot with bravado and roast chicken?

    3) Isn’t lolita cracking on to the wrong person? The AI getting more rom-com action from her than ledo.
