Date Alive #02 — The Choice System

April 6th, 2013

Why do I get the feeling that these people have never actually played a visual novel?

Impressions:

Well, it was certainly more even than the first episode. It was also at an overall lower quality than the first episode, especially in terms of the action. It was more focused on attempting to be funny and I think did a better job of that than the first episode where the comedy trailed off into an endless stream of exposition very quickly, but not enough to make up for excising the action from the show. Touka was kind of amusing at least, in one of the more harmless magical girlfriend cross enthusiastic dog archetypes not done too obnoxiously.

I can’t really ever stand when anime tries to make overblown jokes about the visual novel choice system. Excel Saga did it right. Nearly everything recently tries to pretend like only some master player could navigate the things instead of it generally being a decision between things like "1.) Tell her she’s cute. 2.) Set her on fire. 3.) Stick it in." I don’t even begrudge VNs for that. It’s just good game design to not obfuscate what you’re choosing and does nothing but frustrate the player if the effects of the choices are something utterly unpredictible. Anyway, whatever my point originally was, that whole entire setup just pained me and it was like… the crux of the episode. Maybe they got it all out of their system this week. …Or will proceed to run it into the ground over and over again.

The good choice is 3.) Stick it in

Be prepared. This is a recurring mechanic they use.

Was the music as insane as the 1st episode?

  • Goldi says:

So is the Comedy back at the level of start of episode 1? You know the imouto dancing and teasing.

  • The Phantom says:

I was laughing my ass off when they began to pester him for date with the spirit. I still dont know what the hell this is all about, but I have liked it so far.

Is it just me, or is this entire premise just one giant ass pull?
