Vividred Operation #02 — Friendly Fire
January 17th, 2013
I’m not sure what else to call getting beaned by a CG jet.
Impressions:
Said beaning was probably the most amusing part of the episode, although you know me and striking small children with oversized ordnance. For some reason, I find it hard to get particularly excited about watching other people watch magic girls fight against generic CG machines. Yes, that’s right. When they flew off to actually fight the big mechanized blop just sitting there, they decided that the thing everyone wanted to see was everybody else watching them and being amazed by what was happening off-screen. Good goddamned god, A-1. Seriously? Thankfully, that only lasted a few minutes, but then it was time for an extended flashback about friendship so they could be better lesbians and combine into a single large lesbian. I guess what I’m saying is that it’s still not clear what the hell they’re doing. Or perhaps more accurately, it’s becoming more clear that the script isn’t so much written as it probably is dictated to them by the neighborhood sharpei.
Most of the episode was harmless enough though and certainly a step up from the first. The action, while CGful and not really impressive in any way, was at least present, and people hit things with other things. They introduced a rival/enemy magical girl too, so at least they won’t be fighting those awful CG things forever. They could have really used a better framing shot than her crotch with red lights between it though. Then again, I’m already rolling my eyes at the inevitable "our super magic engine that other magic girls are trying to destroy doesn’t run on rainbows and sunshine after all" twist that practically screamed.
It was a step up at any right while Sasami took a massive step down. It still needs to pick up the pace quite a bit, remember that nobody wants to see other people oohing and aahing over something they could be oohing and aahing over themselves, and either go all out with the campiness or cut it entirely. Being wishy-washy isn’t going to cut it. Let’s see what Kotoura does after its bipolar half-wreck last week.
