Strange Dog Boys #01 — Little Boys Covered in Sticky Goo
January 5th, 2013
At least the spider was polite enough to patiently wait for them to finish talking.
FYI, the two new shows tomorrow air at around 4am and 6am my time, so don’t expect my usual speedy coverage. Whether or not I cover Ixion depends on my mood after waking up and going through boobs and idols.
Impressions:
Wow. Some quiet. Way to buck the annoying BGM trend, Deen. Very minimalistic, which worked well to highlight the tension of some of the more spiritually/monstery times. That’s about where the compliments run out though. The budget was nowhere near good enough to make those parts impressive in any way. The opposite even. When he sends his magic crow-sword into a crowd and the camera refocuses to above them to watch their masks and robes go flying into the air "This is a cool action scene" was not the first thought in my mind. The spider fared only marginally better. The rest was about 75% talking heads and CG eyeball, so… ugh.
The main issue is that it was just really bland without trying to distinguish itself in any way whatsoever. It didn’t do anything terribly wrong outside of the poor production like obnoxious narration or annoying characters, but it really didn’t do anything well either. The characters aren’t interesting, nothing of import happens, and the monsters are just sort of tacked on. You don’t need to lay out the entire plot in the first episode, but there should be at least a sense of how things are going to generally be progressing. All I got from this is that they’ll go somewhere else and go right back to going shopping and having tea. Maybe befriend some other random boy. Maybe kill a monster if the schedule allows. Or just have more tea.
Preview:
New town.
