The Civilization Blaster #01 — Violin Overdose

October 4th, 2012

Please, no more strings.

Impressions:

It is never a good sign when the second shot of your show is something like this. This just wasn’t very interesting. They did a great job with the fight, but the rest of it was just dull to the extreme. Everybody’s mopey, everything’s a dull shade of grey, and the wailing violins almost never let up. Even with a gun in his face, it’s wailing violins and then a flashback. Were you trying to create tension? Isn’t that what guns are usually for? Why are we reminiscing when you’re about to be shot? There’s a time and place, mopey boy. Even his buddy turned into an exposition machine after beating up the super spy, taking away any of the cool factor he had from grinning about a shotgun blast to the face.

That fight was really about the only hook of the episode though. The main lead that it was focused on for 90% of the time has the personality of mildew and for the world ending due to magic metal disease, you’d think there’d be a little more… well… to do over it. Like New World, there’s simply so little contrast or difference in presentation between events in this show that they all bleed together into one grey, overly-violined blur. Scolded by sister, dead sister, gun in face, world ending, friend is now magical apparently, giant eyeball in the sky, everything gets the exact same treatment. The electric guitar OP at the end came as an immense relief

6 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

It looks like Guilty Crown from afar.
    Not going to get closer.

  • RaiKitsune says:

I read the manga it is actually pretty solid. Nothing like Guilty Crown. There will be a lot of talking heads at one point though. It will be interesting to see how far this show gets into the manga.

  • FlameStrike says:

Don’t worry this is nothing close to Guilty Crown. No moe moe bullshit amongst random potholes and a sea of flaws. I’m biased since I’m a huge fan of the source material, but I think they did a pretty good job. The animation was top notch at least. Their choice of music and colors is either good or bad depending on your preferences though. There was a bit of exposition overload, but if they can get past the exposition in one ep and get to the more interesting parts then I’m all for it.

Well there’s going to be a ton of talking either way.

  • Haxer says:

    Ouma Shoe?

  • Kaisos says:

I really liked this episode. Surprisingly different from the usual stuff.
Will probably pick up the manga after BONES inevitably ruins the show.

  • godlet says:

I actually liked a lot of the music, as music, though it definitely wasn’t a good choice as the soundtrack for this show.
