AliceTale Might Be Kind of Fun

I’ll do this in lieu of waiting for Jojo to pop up and continuing to mock its cheapness and terrible direction.

Gate Sheep was a huge letdown since the trial comprised about 25% of the entire game and all my complaints about the lack of any of character interaction… or characters period ended up extended through the entire thing, so on to the next! The next being probably either Ninetails’ Etrian Odyssey clone, Gears of Dragoon, or Galactica/Nexton’s AliceTale about a magical girl squad fighting wolves based on fairy tales because of ALICE, whatever that means. I generaly don’t bother reading until I know I like the engine and want to put time into it. Thank god for the Ctrl key.

Only one has a demo right now though, so I’ll stick to the former, and since there’s only two tutorial battles in it, I’ll just leave it at the above battle plus "This system is kind of a pain in the ass to play on a laptop’s track pad." The simplicity and action commands keep things flowing well although with five magical girls plus yourself as the/a big bad wolf apparently, I’d hope there are more party mechanics in the wings somewhere as well as a little bit more of an RPG side to it than just the occasional skippable battle. It’d also be nice if the action commands were at least a little randomized instead of totally scripted. It works in small doses, so they better be varying attacks and monsters a hell of a lot more than they were in the demo. Again though, there were only two tutorial battles. Hopefully the game opens up a lot more with the intro out of the way. If you’re going to go as far as to make a neat little engine like that, you may as well make the most of it, not just tack it on to an otherwise fairly generic looking and cheapish VN as they so far appear to have done.
