MLA: Total Eclipse #03 — Needs a Ball Gag

July 15th, 2012

I know who I want to die next!

Impressions:

Good lord, is the Nepal girl annoying. You know what they say about Himalayan girls. I don’t. But I’m sure someone does. She just sticks out like a sore thumb as an utterly ridiculous caricature. While the story’s trying to say "This is so serious, everybody’s banding together because they’ve lost everything and this is all totally important and humanity is on the edge of disaster," here’s this screaming tempermental child throwing tantrums and hissy fits because she was assigned a new commander. In a military unit. How dare they?

Aaaaaand since the episode was split about evenly between an introduction to her and the actual main character of the show… yeah. He didn’t really do a whole lot wrong, but every time she opened her mouth, I wanted to kick her in the teeth. The insert song was also a little… weird. Especially when it devolved towards yelling at the very end. The lesson at the end of "We won because we worked together" also rang a bit hollow since Nepal only lost because she stopped to gloat. At least they continue to actually use the CG instead of relying on it as a crutch. Or maybe it’s just the other two and a half shows I watched today all being fairly dull. The battles at least flow decently, but could still be a whole lot more interesting and really go all out since they’re not exactly hampered by such petty things as having to draw more.

I also chuckled a bit at the black bars over the crazies at the start. Are they being censored or is that supposed to be the director making them totally mysterious and menacing? Either way, I laughed. Not the intent, I’m sure.

Rana Linchen will always be my Tibetan/Himalayan girl.

  • Utena30 says:

Where did that guy come from and why do I feel I have to make an effort just to care about this new main character? I thought the main characters were the two girls. Nope, it’s boring man with the same color hair as all of the other male leads from other shows. Just great…

    etery-chan says:

He looks like a typical protagonist in Gundam anime.

  • Ashlotte says:

Seriously need to gag that girl…So far have yet to find a truly likable character in the show yet.

  • longhaul says:

he refrains from BEST THING EVAH for every series, you will learn how to tell when he actually likes or dislikes something

  • The Phantom says:

He is honest, and his comment are most of the time spot on, plus has a wicked sense of humor, also this blog gets the reviews up very fast, most of the time before the episodes are up on most popular streaming sites and this place has been running uninterruptedly for a few years.

You will appreciate this place more and more as you read more reviews, nobody is going to keep a page updated daily like this doing something you dislike, he obviously likes this, and about the comments, well people has all right to give their opinion whatever it is.

    Shirokuma says:

That’s why this blog is so good. The guy can watch a show and use his brain to talk about what happened without going fullfanboy mode (about 75% of anime fanbase, no wonder so many shows are crap). Though how he manage to watch so many terrible shows is quite a feat.

    Aroduc says:

You are talking about someone who has seen two seasons of “So You Think You Can Dance” and the entirety of Veggie Tales just through hanging out with friends and playing with buildy blocks.

But it’s more because my background and other passion is usability and interface design. Mmm all day thinking about how things could/should be improved. Delicious icon design and hours of debating fonts.

  • KLAC_OF_PERSONALITY says:

well at least this ep nobody get slaughter or worse.

yea introduce ep to more characters give at least likely some of most or few last longer than first 2 eps.

  • Anon says:

FAR too many reviews sites are OMG! THIS IS THE GREATEST ANIME EVER!!!!

I watch anime but I am long pass the phase were I watched everything there was available because after a while you realize there is a ton of mediocre series that are simply not worth the effort, the more you watch the more you start to develop something called “standards”.

Besides I watch Oda and I enjoy it, nothing anyone says will change that were only the show can change that.

I dont need validation of my enjoyment of a series, the big issue is when I see people that complain about someone not liking a series that seems to be they are seeking validation of their “enjoyment”, this is becoming more and more apparent with certain fanbases.

    Baby Choo Choo says:

Anon, if I could +1 your post, I would +1 the hell out of it lol.

  • FlameStrike says:

Haha, because sometimes his bashing of shows are hilarious and fun to read. He has his own likes and dislikes, and tells it as such in his blog. I mostly have totally different opinions than him, but life would be boring if everyone totally had the same opinion and all said “Good job, that rocks!” to eachother. If you read this blog you should expect some criticism.

  • The Phantom says:

What the hell happened to this show? this is like a completely different anime? we changed from a great atmosphere blood and death to a harem mecha that even has a male candidate for gay route included.

    etery-chan says:

Indeed, where is the sense of apocalypse and agony? What’s with the wacky BGM and childish people who somehow got to become pilot? Why is it most Japanese authors think Americans are racist people?
You could say that ep1 and ep2 are season 1 of the anim, and ep3 is the start of season 2.
    :-)

Also, in addition to the quite well-stated comments above, you can usually get information or clarification here or on the forums if need be and you ask nicely. The extra effort Aro puts in is refreshing and appreciated, and just another reason to stick around. The other thing I’d add is – there’s a lot of snark in the comments, but speaking personally I’ve found it only serves to make discussions more interesting… And is rarely directed at the person giving the comment, usually at the show they like/dislike. If you feel like it, stick around for a bit. You might just find more answers to your own questions.
