Medaka Box #11 — Twenty Minutes, Two Attacks

June 13th, 2012

I can’t tell if that’s setting a new record for speed or slowness for a Jump show.

Not really sure why Fujiko was so late today, but this popped up about 4 minutes before it, so… *shrug*

Impressions:

Good god. MOVE FORWARD. SHOW, DON’T TELL. I didn’t need to see a flashback to him scattering his superballs for the THIRD time in the last 15 minutes between last episode and this. I know you’ve got a whole episode left to fill after this, but that’s still no excuse to be this slow. And then after a single atempted dodge and getting punched in the gut, it was time for a cutaway flashback to narrate why Medaka goes berserk. And I certainly didn’t need about five minutes of having them glare at each other as they call each other monsters and repeat their own personal mission statements.

So this arc ends apparently with the last episode going to be random nonsense. If any of it had some actual effort put into the animation and it wasn’t about 40 minutes of glaring at each other plus another few minutes of flashbacks across three episodes, it might’ve been kind of cool, but that’s exactly what it was. You can literally count the number of times characters even tried to attack each other on one hand… in a fight/arc that was again stretched across three episodes. They spent easily upwards of fifteen times as long glaring and explaining how awesome and badass the fight was instead of actually doing it. Fantastic. PACING! HA HA!

The 12th episode will be shitty slice of life filler.

And then we will forget about this godawful anime made by mostly dead Gainax.

Why would you show him unless you’re going to animate his arc?

    • Aroduc says:

      Spite.

    • Chipp12 says:

Well, it’s not HIS arc, it’s Minus arc.

    • Borneo says:

They showed him simply because Kumagawa was actually first mentioned in the manga at that point of the story. Gainax has been very faithful to the source material, after all. Which is really a shame, since those early chapters were pretty lame as everyone should have found out by now. I wish they would’ve spiced things up somehow, they couldn’t have made it any worse than it was to begin with.

    Naked Apron Senpai :(

  • Kaisos says:

I would just like to say that I would recommend that everybody read the manga, as it is MUCH better.

I think it might even be more animated than the show is, ha ha ha.

    • Anon says:

I shall now remind you that recommending to read this manga is a violation of the Geneva Convention under “cruel and unusual punishments”.

  • Random says:

This series was a disappointment it was probably only produced to boost the manga sales.

  • Takebou says:

I’ve honestly lost hope in Japan’s ability to direct and/or write proper anime.

Yet, I still watch because every now and then a couple gems pop up like Horizon, Steins;Gate(despite its horrendously slow start), and Madoka.

    • Yue says:

for the love of science, please watch Steins;Gate and buy Horizon (real men walk naked).
