The Woman Named Fujiko Mine #05 — …Will Hardly Be Appearing This Week

May 2nd, 2012

Instead, have her nipples.

Impressions:

Why the show professes to be about Fujiko continues to elude me. Once again, she (or rather, her nipples) were just around for the intro setup and the surprise ending double cross, because nobody could ever expect Fujiko to send people off to loot valuables for her without an ulterior motive. The rest of it was focused on Lupin and Jigen’s first meeting, which like most of this series, was very very dark poorly lit. That made the gunfight and all the trap stuff juuuuust a little bit silly, especially when the two of them were spinning in circles and firing at random. A little ambient lighting wouldn’t have hurt there at all. I think they also used up the budget there because later in the episode, as the characters ‘ran’ away, the animation was their still framed character art sliding along the ground like they were wearing sand rollerblades. They could’ve also probably toned down the sand pit trap scene, especially if they were going to have Fujiko pop up and explain her master plan as they stood trapped in it for minutes on end as it raged around them.

It was certainly better than the last couple weeks though, or at the very least, Jigen and Lupin are more interesting to watch than… whatever the hell they were trying to do with Zenigata and Goemon’s train daycare. Lupin could still use a lot more energy and exitability. Particularly coming off his shenanigans last week, rolling backwards to the almost completely serious version of him makes it seem like they’re just making up what personality they want him to have as they go instead of actually having a good idea of what they want it to be. I’m also fairly sure alexandrite turns green in sunlight, not a deep blue. Not important, but it was just bothering me the whole time and they kept bringing it up.

You know, the more I watch this show the more I wonder why is Fujiko the supposedly main protagonist. I mean, if you want to do a prequel of Lupin III to show how everyone met and shit, that’s fine. I would love to see that. But when the main protagonist of your show mostly spends almost every episode doing nothing while Lupin is actually being active and entertaining, it feels like they wanted Lupin to be the protagonist but could only make this show by billing Fujiko.

      Because nipples.

But yes. I have no idea why she’s the titular character either. At best, she’s just being used as a framing device for the others, but it feels more like she’s tacked on out of obligation instead of actually written into the episodes.
