Eureka 7 AO #01 — Sloth Included
April 12th, 2012
Oh boy. The magical girlfriend found her cutesy pet already.
Impressions:
Not the best beginning. There were the painfully cliched bits; Ao and Naru, the brash young boy who will of course have the secret power to pilot some robot… next week… and his magical prophetic girlfriend who distinguishes herself by being even more helpless than usual. He’s totally brash and unloved because he’s an outsider. Why? Because the characters say so apparently. Also, he comes complete with meaningful flashbacks. Even better. And then there’s the other half, which was a whole lot of exposition, some of which was delivered by a character that looks disturbingly like the son of Stan Lee and Commissioner Gordon. I should probably count that as a positive. Thinking about that beats yada yada magic rocks yada yada space yada yada monsters. Your setting is not a unique flower. Let’s stop info dumping about it, eh?
Production was pretty good, but that’s normal for a Bones show. With the whole show going "something’s about to happen!" but then nothing major actually happening until the closing minutes, it’s hard to say that it was exciting either. You’d think they’d want to get right to the flashy robot action instead of stringing things out and him not even putting on his magic bracelet until maybe next week, but apparently not. The music was rather good at least, or I may still be reeling from how awful Slope’s OP was. What wasn’t good on the production front though was Ao’s voice acting. You know me, I don’t really care one way or the other about that stuff 99% of the time, but him? Ugh. Talk about flat and unemotional.
Preview:

So it’s the first episode of the original show repeated. Great job Bones.
