Dusk Maiden of Amnesia #03 — Eternal Darkness
April 22nd, 2012
At least it remains visually interesting.
Impressions:
Another episode that would have worked a whole lot better without the first episode of the show; introductions to characters we’ve already seen and assorted nonsense over things they’ve already shown to be incorrect. We’ve already seen that Yuuko’s more or less harmless and that Kirie knows that too, so rewinding to some previous point and trying to pretend like she’s a soul-eating monster doesn’t work so well. Hopefully they’ve more or less caught up to the first episode by this point and can finally move on.
I do continue to like how they’re visually portraying her in the views of different characters. This week she got a very corpse-like rotting look because that’s how Kirie viewed her and was bleeding into how Teiichi saw her too (and the entire school for that matter), but despite how hard they tried, there was still very little actual tension to any of it. They could have also done a better job contrasting between the "real" and "afraid" (or "insane" if you want to go with an Eternal Darkness bend) views of the school. I at least understood what they were doing even before the painfully obvious wipe between the worlds, but both palettes were too dark to contrast well. Sharper reds and more uneven shading would have helped really show his mental state there better.
