Dusk Maiden of Amnesia #01 — Re-Re-Rewind

April 8th, 2012

So nice, you get to watch it twice.

Impressions:

As seems to oft be the case with Silver Link, I’m torn between complimenting their rare directive creativity in this industry and being annoyed at them for how it doesn’t actually work very well, but this time there’s an extra dollop of horribly rendered CG hallways on top. They… pain me. But back to the direction. The show begins with an eight minute segment of Momoe Screamy expositioning while various paranormal events happen around her while she continues completely obliviously. Okay, kind of funny. Then other characters come in who can clearly see the ghost and hold one-sided conversations with her, the misunderstandings obvious. Also not stellar, but fine. I understand the joke, it didn’t need to go on for 8 minutes, but fine. Then the interstitial kicks in and we relive the entire last third of the episode all over again, this time getting to see the ghost, Yuuko. So yes. It was about 8 minutes of ‘recycled’ scenes in the first episode alone. Like I said, it’s certainly a creative choice of direction, and I think I would have been fine with either SINGLE one of them since they’re both amusing in their own ways, or better yet, a mix of Yuuko appearing and disappearing to help the whole surreal angle, or even if the scenes weren’t a third of the entire episode, but both in sequence? There’s far too much that’s identical between the two of them, or jokes that were obvious even in the unvoiced part to make seeing it all over again in its entirety anything but an annoyance.

Besides Screamy and that particular directional choice though, it was pretty good. Even besides the pseudo-recycled scenes though, production was fairly weak for a Silver Link show which was unfortunate. Music was handled quite well though. Still it was probably the most seamless introduction to a show and characters this season thanks to nobody sitting down and listing out character traits for the benefit of the audience. Yuuko’s playfulness also makes her a lot more endearing right off the bat. The other two are fairly forgettable, but at least unlike Screamy, they don’t make me want to throttle them. Not the highest praise, I’m aware. Hopefully they can turn that creativity towards something a little less dumb next week. Also kill Screamy. Violently.

This might turn out better than expected. But why is Chapter 4 of Wuthering Heights a top related video?

    • Aroduc says:

It’s best not to ask what Youtube considers related. Hell, it always includes the same four game recordings because they’re the only unlisted videos on that account.

Although now that Youtube lets you remove copyright violation strikes by removing videos, maybe I won’t have to make a ninth account.

    Step 1: Draw animation frames!
Step 2: Draw animation frames with extra character in them!
    Step 3: Underpants
    Step 4: Profit!

I actually enjoyed the manga quite a bit. Sadly, this is looking like a sub-par adaptation. *sigh*

Exactly, my excitement all goes down from seeing the recycled sequence.
    How lazy!!
