Crawl! Nyarlathotep Girl #01 — Space CQC

April 9th, 2012

Can’t miss an opportunity to write out Nyarlathotep.

Zetman’s broadcast was delayed by 40 minutes, so I’m going out to do Aroduc things for a little while now. I might be a little delayed getting to it, but I do plan to cover at least the second episode.

Impressions:

Well, to start, it’s very firmly in the magical girlfriend area, but at least there’s only the barest glimpses of romance, likely tossed in because there’s a male and ‘female.’ The focus is wholly on the comedy without any distraction from it lasting more than a few moments at most. Mahiro does distinguish himself from the pack of bland male leads by trying to rule his particular woman-thing through stabbing, threats of stabbing, and assorted other violence. It’s no Sento and his Magical Bat of +5 Masochism, but compared to all the other bland male leads this season, I’ll take it. His curiously incandescent penis does give me pause though. Nyarl herself could use a valium or two though. It’s a change from the usual morose and streeeetched out style that anime normally likes, but this is just slightly too far on the other end. Listening to her go a mile a minute is exhausting. She did win a lot of points for declaring she was going to use "Space CQC" and then kicking it in the fhtagns and some of her random tangents could be amusing, but most of the time, she was just rather loud. The Pokemon bit towards the end too… ehhh…

As has been usual for Xebec in recent years, there aren’t any issues with the technical production and it’s certainly well above average. Nyarl can be a little oddly drawn at times, but I’m pretty sure that’s part of her general style given how much she hops and flops around. I do think that they didn’t quite reach the blood-drenched otherworld they were going for whenever Nyarl had to briefly fight something. Better shading and contrast in the coloring would’ve helped there. Otherwise though, they do a good job conveying Nyarl’s energy visually without any obnoxious stills and whatnot. It also blitzed right along for the most part although it did sort of get bogged down in needless exposition at the start… and that was after making a joke about fastforwarding through it. Not winning any points for awareness here, Xebec.

7 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Wilfriback says:

Video got owned by TV tokyo…

  • Dynellen says:

This was better than I expected, not quite Korean zombie level of randomness and could’ve used a bit more animation on the action/fork bits instead of slapping text/shot of the sky on screen.

Overall seems a watchable comedy for now at least.

Lolis and monsters!!! Japan made it again
sure is the heaven for all.

  • Dr. Dust Cell says:

Nyaluko really loves to blush, doesn’t she

  • Anise_Punter says:

*Stabs the guy who decided to cast Kana Asumi in this with a fork*

  • Kefit says:

This was much better than expected, and I actually expect quite a bit from this director and this staff at this point. It would be nice if they could actually make a full season of a good show, as opposed to MM! going complete nonsense mode and never turning back after a very strong character based start. Nyaruko isn’t exactly such a show, but if it keeps up the pace and quality of this first episode then it will be more than acceptable.

  • Travis says:

I had no interest in watching this whatsoever; time, work, etc. But-

Did they pull off a Chaosium-style ‘roll for Sanity damage’ gag in screen 17? Do I see a Dark Young in number 20? And is that the sign of Shudde M’ell? Damnit, I may just have to watch this.
