Please Summer #01 — Where Have I Seen This Before?

January 9th, 2012

God damn it. I thought this franchise was dead.

I’m really not sure why Crunchyroll has Another scheduled to be put up today since it doesn’t air until tomorrow, but… uh… well, whatever. We’ll see what comes of that.

Impressions:

So… there were notes from the director or original creator or whoever that they were going for the same kind of romance as Onegai Teacher, a series I despised, but I took that as just the tone. Imagine how thrilled I was when this opened with still shots of the MC narrating all his character traits, including actually talking over himself and was then injured/killed by an alien crashing before being magically healed. Then, a red-haired girl transfers into his class the next day, so clueless that she doesn’t know how to shake hands. GEE, I WONDER WHAT THIS COULD MEAN. Even Milky Holmes could solve this goddamned mystery. Then we move on to the only remnant of his injuries being a wound that looks like a hickey, which eventually goes out of control for some reason, making him collapse and requiring the combination of her magical pet and her kissing him to bring him back to life.

So, uh, good news for people who thought that Onegai Teacher was the best goddamned thing ever because you’re getting an exact clone of it. My hatred, on the other hand, only grew a little more with every additional similarity they tacked on. But this time, she’s a student! The music was okay, but the production otherwise was pretty poor. They’re trying far too hard with the characters too, and everybody’s obligatory defining character trait is practically beaten over your head. Sometimes, the main character trait is that they’re wearing a different school uniform. Why? "It’s a secret." What stellar and non-gimmicky writing. I am totally intrigued by this hilarious character who wears slightly different clothes.

Preview:

Go away, you hideous beast.

  • Chen says:

I take it Onegai Teacher isn’t very good? ;D

The MC does look like a complete wimp, so no arguments there.

    • Aroduc says:

The lead was an angsty kid who had magical disease that put him into comas when the writing determined it was time for melodrama. That’s really all you need to know.

      • Anon says:

I would not say that, he was kinda distant but no emo … I dont recall angst, I suppose his inner thoughts might lead to seeing him that way but he acted normal.

Besides it was interesting seeing their relationship developing and it felt natural despite it starting backwards, the one I have a bone to pick up is Twins because the way it solve it was massive disappointment.

  • sterling01 says:

I liked Onegai Twins because it was twice as bad as Onegai Teacher

  • Cytl says:

I read the Onegai Teacher manga (too long ago to remember how bad it was), anyway it sounds fucking retarded to revamp such an unimportant franchise.

  • Hayate-kun says:

…Instead of redhead teacher, its a redhead classmate that’s an alien…

    ….

    ….

Though the rate of getting caught seems to have gotten higher in this one…

  • sage says:

    Dibs on Morinoclone.

  • TEd says:

  • Totali says:

    OH NOES THE Y2K BUGGGG

Oh wait, it’s 2012……….. the world is going to end, NOOOOOO!!!!!

  • Rednal says:

    It’s been so long since I watched that… I totally forgot. You’re right, though, they ARE similar. XD;

Well, Lemon made me laugh, so I’ll watch for her, I suppose.

  • Progeusz says:

Onegai Teacher was much better. Checked one minute ago.
Lemon is by far the best character in Ano Natsu, I hope she’ll get much screentime.

  • The Phantom says:

I liked this, there was absolutely no angst anywhere, and the episode was solid, who cares if the same was made before, 90%+ of this season fits into that, what I care is how fun it is, and damn even if cliche, that scene at the end had me laughing my ass off for a while.

Good show following it from now on.
