Listen To What Your Father Says!! #01 — What’s My Premise Again?

January 10th, 2012

I’m still not sure how these MCs don’t drown in the rain.

Impressions:

I think what surprised me the most is how little of basically anything there is here. Usually these kind of shows cannot wait to get to their horrible premise, especially with Feel at the helm. This episode, however, was almost completely centered on the introduction of Mature Female Love Interest who will no doubt compete with Quasi-Incestual Love Interest who is already moist for Useless Lead and spends her days on roofs staring at pictures of her step-uncle. So is Mature Female Love Interest for that matter, but at least she’s been presented as off-kilter. Not really enough to actually be funny, but at least nobody’s screaming the punchlines to her jokes at me.

It’s not horrible, and production is at the usual decent-but-not-great Feel level, but I’m struggling to really think of much good to say about it either. Raika is kind of okay, I guess, but the lead is terrible and has absolutely no comedic chemistry with anybody. It doesn’t help that Feel can’t resist being Feel either and making him worse by immediately zooming in on the breasts, thighs, and panties of everything with a pulse and ovaries. If it was supposed to be about his relationship with his soon-to-be ‘daughters,’ then having him gawk at their panties and walk in on them changing is not sending the right message. At least Raika seems to be screwing with him instead of being nothing more than a horrible cliche.

So basically, I have a hard time telling what this is trying to be or do. It’s not particularly offensive, but it’s not funny, touching, dramatic… anything either. It’s mostly just a lot of blank space. Since literally nothing else airs on Tuesdays, I’ll give it another look or two, but this episode could have easily been about 15 minutes shorter and lost absolutely nothing. That’s really not a good way to hook an audience and doesn’t bode well for the future.

Preview:

Less Raika, the one okay thing about the episode.

Youtube video totally has no sound what so ever.

  • Richfeet says:

What’s Kouta Hirano doing in this anime?

  • Nan says:

Hard time telling what it’s trying to be? Even my optimism doesn’t stretch that far. Could probably predict the scripts with 90% accuracy. Who are you and what have you done with Aroduc.

My take on it… hmm, remember Yoichi? Tone the blatancy of it down, make the other characters younger and give the plot flow a once/twice-over with photoshop’s soften tool. Make the MC more useless but give him supposed responsibilities and feelings of such, make him proficient at menial tasks so he ‘belongs.’ Throw in questionable fanservice and screwy anime logic/morals over such, and give it an emotional peak at I’d say 3 interspersed points in the storyline, 4 would get campy. It has a high chance of ending with a sadistic choice that is glossed over. Just an initial guess from what I’ve seen of it, which isn’t much.

    • Maybe you should go save anime.

And have to either learn Japanese (no desire) or be totally reliant on a translator, not to mention dealing with the whole xenophobia thing? Meh.

This show does have those vibes to it, I’ve got to agree, and those are some of my least favorite vibes.

Maybe all the producers should watch GA Art Design; that’s how you make a 12 episode comedy with no fanservice and no drama that’s actually funny.

Who thought it was a good idea to bring back Riko, terrible. No one likes your style, Riko.

  • Chen says:

Hair conditioners, how do they work? @Mature Female Love Interest

  • lollerman says:

No seriously, what the f*** was this nonsense? Ignoring the fact that this felt like an insane amount of padding, does anybody else find it creepy, borderline insane that a nineteen year old college student was checking out a ten year old’s ass? More importantly, did anything actually happen in this series? Usually Ono Daisuke at least brings some much needed gravitas to the anime, but here even he felt like he was mailing it in for a paycheck.

Dear god, somebody actually make an anime that they actually care about. One “Cowboy Bebop” is all I ask for once every 3 years.

  • Ewan says:

Wow, this has a really messed up pacing… Their focus is like college then sisters then back to college then sisters. The LN introduced the characters fine, the club should have been a flashback or something like that cause it’s really useless to the plot just introducing the so-called leading lady of the protag. It’s like putting the b-plot first before the a-plot.

the two older “daughter” are too generic.

the loli one is very cute though.
    hmmm…

  • The Phantom says:

This was actually decently good until the last part, then it suddenly became disturbing, and that ending… that stuff is just wrong… what kind of sick individual would want something with some preteen little girls, this is just sick, I’m utterly disturbed by this, this kind of anime should have never aired.
