Kill Me Baby #01 — Ninjas are Dicks

January 5th, 2012

The OP makes me want to kill babies.

Impressions:

If I had to pick one word to describe this show, it’d be sparse. The production is bad. Really bad. Oh sure, it’s more animated than some things, like… say, New Prince of Tennis, but the art’s also exceedingly simplistic and it doesn’t have background music so much as it occasionally have long sound effects that just sort of become background noise. A lot of shots look like all they did was color in the original’s art, throw up an incredibly generic background, add voices, then nip off to the pub. Maybe taking on six shows this season wasn’t such a great idea after all, eh, JC Staff? This becomes especially notable in any of the Agiri segments as things slow down quite a bit because she talks like she’s high on at least 15 different narcotics. That said, her jokes were significantly stronger than anything Yasuna and Sonya did. They did detract some from her jokes occasionally by yelling out what the punchline was after the joke had already been made, but if I close my eyes and just wish for them to shut up, maybe they’ll stop that.

Production woes aside (and woeful they are), I think they actually did a decent job otherwise. It got the same thing right as GA Art Class with these kinds of adaptations in that it actually kept things moving right and bounced from one joke to the next without trying to unnaturally stretch things out long enough to make me start clock gazing and much of the humor was of the slapstick format I so very much prefer over the usual Japanese "Scream the punchline, make a face" formula. I even chuckled a few times, so high praise indeed. Unfortunately, most of the Sonya/Yasuna parts were fairly mediocre too, so I can’t really say that it deserves particularly high marks. I could see watching Agiri screw around with them, but better direction and production would go a long way to selling this slapstick. It all just feels so vacuous and empty… like I’m watching some kind of flash web short.

It also bears mentioning that as a Thursday show, it’s also up against the comedy powerhouses of Milky Holmes and Guilty Crown, neither of which had (new) episodes today. That may recalibrate my opinion significantly.

Pure trash hella bad how JC staff is still in business beats the hell out of me.

  • Chen says:

Oh my, the OP just sold me on this show. Extraterrestrials + fisticuffs + ska + KILL ME BABY. Yes, please!

  • AGear2Ax says:

Oh my… that OP! My ears! Speaking of Comedies… I though Aroduc has somtething to say about the GC recap… Well, let’s say is the comedy event of the season… but it was an 1-hour recap instead a 20-minutes recap :P So we start 2012 with heavy competition on the comedy deparment…

    • Aroduc says:

The funniest part of the recap episode was how it basically skipped episodes 5-11 or so.

  • NightShadow2239 says:

“The OP makes me want to kill babies.”

    …Oh my

  • RJ TAYLER says:

Let me see here: “Saki” + “Nagi Sanzenin” + the ‘work experience crew’ at JC Staff in charge of the animation = this. The local folk-ska ensemble to provide the opening ear worm and hiring the same crew from “Lucky Star” as extras are then added to the mix.

Not sure if this gag series has the legs, but all the ingredients are there for a ‘cult hit’ if it is done right, if done wrong then…..

  • AGear2Ax says:

I didn’t notice that the show actually is called “Baby, please kill me!” I though Aroduc was joking with the title… I saw the OP but didn’t notice the title >.<

    • Aroduc says:

No, the title is Kill Me Baby in katakana. “Baby, Please Kill Me” is how they’re choosing to ‘translate’ it for some reason. Since they yell Kill Me Baby at least a couple dozen times in the OP as well as at every interstitial, it’s hard to think of it as anything else.

  • Anise_Punter says:

That OP is beyond dreadful. Denpa Onna and Arakawa’s OP are leagues ahead of that one.

Always up for some slapstick though. Always.

  • Serpit says:

I think their primary strategy is for 2ch to churn out endless amounts of parody videos featuring the ED dance as a form of viral marketing.

  • redpanther says:

I’m still waiting for a flood of yuri pics from this series. That’s pretty much all I care.

  • Jack says:

It’s not that bad of an OP.

Oingo Boingo, Ska and a bit of Angelspit (sans the Industrial wheelhouse). The vocals are ear shattering and flat, but that’s pretty standard for what they were trying to do. I can see where your average basement ridden anime fan would find it offensive especially after being fed a non-stop diet of soulless over produced Techno or crappy Rock.

Btw…I receive a lot of “Server” errors when posting to your site using Google’s Chrome browser (latest stable build; not Beta). The comment is posted, but I’m tossed to this error screen after I hit “Submit”:

    FYI.

    • Jack says:

Hmm…just happened with FireFox as well. Must be my set-up.

    • Aroduc says:

No, it’s almost certainly on the site’s side. It can get pretty bad on the backend at times and I really have no idea why. I think it has to do with the WP3.0 update because that’s when the problem started showing up, but the blog itself is generally fine. When I ask my host, they always just direct me to some generic page on optimizing WordPress that solves absolutely nothing. I’ve tried testing and tweaking, but since it seems to come and go at random, it’s hard to tell if anything actual works until a day or two later when I can’t access the backend for a 15-20 minute stretch again.
