You and I. #01 — Blank Space

October 3rd, 2011

Boring boys in spring.

Impressions:

Ugh. This was tedious to the extreme. Comparing it to Tamayura since both have a broadly similar tone and presentation, the music here was barely present, characters were mostly static and completely unemotional, and while it shared Tamayura’s jankier artwork with a heavy dose of that girly style, the character animation and general atmospheric art was bland and not emotive at all. Basically, almost every scene in Tamayura’s first episode was clearly evocative, while here, there’s so much empty space without any clear meaning or purpose.

It did have slightly more of a focus on humor, but not a significant one, and the jokes are far from good. Most of it was just spent watching the boys sit around. And yes, they were indeed grooming each other’s hair under the cherry blossoms just like in the promo. I think if there had been more of that, it would have improved matters. Or at the very least, given me something substatial to actually say, because as it stands, almost the whole episode was just a big ol’ pile of nada. Not atmospheric, not dramatic, not comic, just… "Here’s some kids… okay, see you later."

Preview:

Ew, a girl.

I find it hard to believe that ALL of the characters I’m seeing right now are ALL dudes who just happened to look like girls with those hairstyles.

    • U. Renko says:

well, looking at the screenshots there is a girl actually. (but I think it’s a doll/figure/whateveryoucallit.)

and there is one in the preview too, I can tell by the ribbon.
